New Motorola Droid Update Available

Does it break tethering?

I sometimes use the paid version of PDANet 2.45 for laptop tethering. I paid for the App, but I do not pay Verizon an extra monthly fee for this. I don't think Verizon likes this.

Does anyone know if this update FRG83D breaks PDANet tethering?

I've searched through several threads about rooting and the new Droid update and as I am such a newbie at all of this I don't now what to do. I rooted my Droid (Motorola Droid, os 2.2) last week because not only did I need to tether (usb) but I also liked the idea of more control through available ROMs. I'm a graphic designer and usually don't have trouble learning new technology fairly quickly, but I haven't had the time to research ROMs and other ways to customize my rooted droid beyond adding a few of the apps recommended by more experienced users on this site.

I'm getting constant system update notifications but don't want to risk unrooting unless I know exactly how to re-root after the update. I don't care if I loose the few programs I installed since the root (Watchdog, PdaNet, WaveSecure, Setcpu, Titanium, Autokiller, and Netcounter) because I figure I an just reinstall after rerooting.

Can anyone tell me - or point me to the thread/post that describes in simple terms - how to re-root my Droid following the latest update? Thanks in advanced and my apologies if I failed to find the right thread to obtain this info.

Thanks!

Thank you so much for the link! So I took a look and again I can't stress enough how foreign a lot of this is to me. I figure the first link (FRG83D Odexed) is the one for my relatively simple purposes. The idea would be to download and install this in order to have the update while staying rooted the whole time? Also, what are "Clockworkmod" and "SPRecovery" instructions?

I'm so sorry for my ignorance in these matters, I just don't want to get into deep waters and end up bricking my phone for lack of prior research. Having my phone rooted has meant easy usb tethering and now I figure I should get the update in case I ever have to contact the carrier and they ask why I didn't update. Plus some on here have said it will speed up my phone...

Thanks/Sorry,

Okay...before installing anyone of those updates, be sure that you have a custom recovery installed on your rooted phone. It will help you with installing updates or custom ROMs. Also, if you mess up your phone somehow, that's when you're custom recovery will help you. You can save an "image" of your current phone settings so that when you do mess up with something you can revert back to your last working settings. Personally, I use the latest version of SPRecovery. I've never tried Clockworkmod recovery.

When you rooted your phone for the first time, the next thing you should've done was to install a custom recovery. :p

AHH ok so these are recovery programs and directions based on which one I have. How does one "boot into recovery?" for this procedure or if things do go awry in the future, so I'm able to get back to settings previously backed up. I just downloaded SPRecovery, so that's what I'll be using.

Yikes! I spoke too soon, I figured I'd have SPRecovery downloaded and install before my next reply but I can't find it in Market. Where do I get it?

Basically, you just power off on the phone. While pressing and holding the "X" button down on your slide keyboard, power on the device and wait until you see the Android icon. You use the volume buttons to scroll up/down. Your camera button is the confirm button. The power button takes you back a page.

It won't be in the market. Just do a search here in the forum for the latest version or you can even Google it. Just find the latest version and install it. Make sure you follow the directions on how to install it also.

Ok, I'm so sorry for all the handholding, but I found and downloaded this: "SPRecovery ESE81" from the following url: "http://www.tucows.com/preview/853732" Now I'm not sure how to proceed. I looked on this site and kept seeing a long set of instructions for installing SPRecovery that I think start with installing a program (ROM something?) that housed SPRecovery within it. What should my first move be...?

If you're already rooted, go to the market and install ROM Manager. You can use it to install SPRecovery or CW Recovery.

Okay...here's an old link of how to install steps: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/metickone/104030-rooted-stock-odexed-deodexed-frg83d.html

Since you are already rooted, all you need to do is install SPrecovery. Just look for the steps and follow on how to install SPRecovery there.

THANK YOU!!! I'll do that and see if I can follow metiCKone's directions. Hopefully once I install ROM manager I'll be able to install SPR with no problems. Thanks so much for all your help!!
