I used to be on a older plan for 700 mins for 59.99 a month that was a promotional as well, it ended and for several years I kept that plan. The same with this one, its promotional, it DOES NOT expire or go away once you have it, its yours forever or until you change plans. This was confirmed as well talking to the rep when I changed my plan over to the new one.
It's odd now at this point of the thread that people hare bringing up the length of the offered plan. I've been with Verizon got almost 10 years. Even plans that were no longer offered were always grandfathered.
Verizon is a phone company, not a bank where they draw you in at a low interest rate and then jack the price up on you later. I believe every person who said a rep told them it was "for a year," or "temporary" did tell you that because that is the best information they have available at this time And I think some of them pull it out of their behinds to cover said area of the human anatomy. (That's called keeping it family friendly)
It just makes sense that you have to be competitive price wise and they are in competition with Sprint on this and I believe others will follow as well.
Everyone a few months ago was predicting the demise of free data. That was not only erroneous, quite the contrary we are getting better deals then ever. I suspect prices will come down even more in the future.
The Verizon Rep I spoke with told me very explicitly that Verizon Wireless was testing this new rate plan with the idea to possibly offer it permanently...after a one year trial period...It's not a PLAN, it's a PROMOTION and the discount will go away in a year. That was my understanding going in to the deal, that's what I discussed with the rep when I signed up...
In any case, I feel pretty lucky. I've had my Droid 1 for a little under a year. I hit the one year mark on November 15th. I was genuinely confused about whether I was eligible for the promotion, told the rep I did not receive an e-mail, but saw it on a phone forum website, and she still offered it to me. I did not get friends and family, but all in all, I was able to get nearly $30 dollars shaved off my monthly bill. I was also lucky enough to get the Droid Pro for $129.00! I simply asked the Verizon rep if she could possibly sell me the phone at the two year price. She says, "Let me check" and puts me on hold. When she came back online she tells me, "Yes. The 2-year price is $279.00. We can give you an instant $50 off the phone + a $100 dollar mail in rebate, which brings the price down to $129.00. And, you don't have to pay anything right now. We'll simply add the charges onto your next monthly phone bill." Needless to say I was pumped! Oh, incidentally, she pre-ordered the phone for me the day before pre-orders officially began. Also, I don't know how it works for some of you all. However, the rep also told me this one year 'trial' does not extend my initial 2-year contract to a third year. Rather, the second year of my old plan simply converts to this new rate plan. Soooo, according to the Verizon Rep, I will still be eligible to buy another new phone a year from now, if I so choose. I didn't read all the posts here, but from what I did read, it sounds like it was simply random as to what kind of response people get/got when they called.
im currently on a 1 year contract, 700 minute family plan (2 phones). my contract is up on 2/11. if i switch to the $139 family plan, your saying my contract wouldnt extend a extra year?
For those of you lucky enough to be able to take advantage of this screaming deal. Do you have to put the data plan on all your phones, or can you still pay the data (less the discount) on say 2 or 3 phones on a 5 phone family plan??
Thanks for any info. If that's the case, I'm going to call and see if I qualify!
In my case - I did not have to put data on all phones. I went and looked at my account and I have the data credit for three phones and no data on the fourth. I asked the CSR while on the phone if I had to put data on all and she said no so I didn't and its not. I think it depends on which CSR you happen to get.
