Does it matter if we need to have the Droid on 3G or WIFI for the update? I could have sworn we needed 3G, but when I am home on my weekends (no work until Thursday gotta love those 4 day weekends) I always have my WIFI turned on.

You make a great point for ME to root. But, if my guys root and have issues, I pay if they have any problems. I need to be more cautious with them. If all goes well with me...then you know...trickle down.

Of course, you always run the risk of bricking a phone when you are doing an update (even with OTA updates), but I wouldn't worry too much. You can normally flash back to stock if you need warranty work.

Below is a link to the guide that I followed when rooting my phone.

Root your DROID and install the Bugless Beast ROM - SmartPhoneADDICTED

The guide uses Bugless Beast (based on 2.1) and I have found all of the 2.1 Droid ROMs to be quite unstable. So, I switched to Bugless Beauty (based on 2.0.1) which is actually more stable than the stock 2.0.1 ROM. Once the official 2.1 OTA comes out, all of this will change though, since the cooks will have a good basis for their patches.

Bugless Beast is not based on 2.1 build....unless theres another I've never seen.

But you're right about all the 2.1 ROMs, they've always been unstable for me and I stay away from them

The most important point here is that this update is just not about live wallpapers etc... it's about fixing a large number of existing issues with the phone.

If you have a ROM running now those issues will remain until they release a new ROM to replace it.

I would just assume have the official OTA and then wait until someone has a 2.1 ROM that is stable.

I knew this was gonna happen. 2.1 I'll put money on it will be the last update the Droid gets. The N1 is their prize phone and the Droid is faded. This pretty evident by the lack of even all the 2.1 features.
Wrong. They both have had one update since the N1 came out. They are on par. This will put the Droid ahead in the amount of updates. The N1 had problems from the moment it was released, so priority is going to be that phone for the time being. Also, for the time being, the N1 is only available on TMobile with only rumors of it being available for Verizon...so it's two different markets of customers. And with Verizon having more customers than TMobile Google will continue with the Droid because there is more money in that.

Even still...what updates do we really need from Google anyhow?
it actually isnt a rumor that its coming to verizon it was on there nexus one website sating that it WILL come to verizon in spring

I'm sick of people being angry this doesnt include flash.

If you think you're getting flash soon *ADMIN EDIT*. Can I make it any more clear? Flash will not be coming to Droid phone for many months. It has NOTHING to do with Motorola, Google, or Verizon.[/quote]how do u know its not coming for months huh?

*Admin Edit *

This post was edited by Miami....the above quote was way out of line. Also was very very wong....

Im tired of the auto rotate. That alone is worth risking it

me too, it drives me bonkers. There are other bugs too.

It wont auto switch the audio if I plug in a headset,
When i get a call it wants me to unlock the phone first
get duplicate text msgs
seems slower when not overclocking

I have been using 2.0.3 from sholes
i have the same problem wit wanting me to unlock to answer phone...also sometimes when i get a call my screen stays black and i cant see whos calling or even answer i hope 2.1 wont have this problem

Why cant you people just turn off auto rotate? My phone does not rotate unless I deploy the keyboard. How hard is it to turn if off?? Am I missing something??

I've made it through all the posts. I've got a bunch of non-market 2.1 apps installed that I will uninstall prior to the OTA update. I'm not rooted and I don't have the OTA update anyways so I may ignore the update for a day or so to see what others think. While most seem to think this update will be just some minor fixes and a multi-touch browser we all knew those things were likely to come anyways. If nothing special comes along it only means that we've cleared the way for true goodies to come along next time. I don't know enough about how these things are released to know if they put in non-announced "surprises". The other thing I'm looking forward to is the multitude of 2.2 threads that will be popping up soon:)

I'm a virgin too. About to buy my first smartphone and have chosen the Droid. Should I wait until the 2.1 update has been out for some period so it is already installed on my phone. Any advantages to the timing? Thanks...

No don't wait. The learning curve for the Droid takes a few days. Get it now so you can learn the ins and outs. You won't be disappointed. This is especially true since this is your first smartphone. It took me a while to get used to the DROID after using Windows Mobile products. The DROID is 10 times the phone than any other OS.

Thanks. Good Advice. May not be able to worry about getting phone before 2.1. I'm in D.C. and I may not be able to dig out to get anything 'til, like, April or something! Ugh. Even more snow today...

Miami have you heard anything about when 2.1 will be coming out?

I heard from a source that got the same info "from two people that don't know each other" that we won't get it till March.

What's funny is I heard mid march the other day also. Now this doesn't mean it won't start to roll though. My friend was being very cautious about it since he was "off" by 2.5 weeks the first time. Now the better part of that is I believe we can expect to see Flash very soon too. It won't take until June from what I know
