I like to have quick access to the things i use the most. If im gonna make a folder and put it on my desktop why not just use the tray instead?

Frankly, I'm a bit surprised (pleased) about a couple of things.

First, the promptness of the upgrade by Motorola and Verizon reinforces my admiration for the stability and excellent design of the Android O/S. I doubt that very many folks here have been involved in implementing major software upgrades, especially for an operating system, but it's not a simple task, especially for a particular hardware platform. Having 2.1 ready for the Droid only a few weeks after it was released from Google is quite an accomplishment.

Second, it appears that Motorola (at least) plans to be somewhat more transparent in their upgrade plans. That, too, is welcome news and, again, it's not something a vendor undertakes lightly since it can often raise more problems for a vendor than it solves. It doesn't fully resolve issues of rumors built on rumors since upgrades by Motorola don't necessarily mean upgrades by Verizon but it's a good start.

I highly recommend "Apps Organizer" from the market. U tag you programs using a label and then create a shortcut to that label on one of your app screens. Clicking the shortcut brings up a little menu with the tagged apps, much faster than switching homescreens.

If I use the Tray I have to scroll all through apps to find one particular one. With the 3 screens now I use one screen with a folder for my games and entertainment, the home screen for my contacts and directions, and my right screen for social networking. I am looking forward to the 5 screen layout out once it comes out. I do have the 2.1 launcher apk that I have played with and liked, but went back to the stock since I was to lazy to redo the screens.:)

If there is no live wallpapers, how is it any different then most of the roms out there?
Even if there is live wallpapers...who cares? I can imagine that those will lag the phone and take up more memory. I don't unlock my phone to stare at moving wallpapers, but maybe that's just me. Besides...all of my icons and widgets are going to cover them up anyhow.

With you 100%. Who ever really used Dreamscapes in Vista???

I couldnt stand the 2.1 apk because it was sooo slow and laggy. Im hoping that the 2.1 release will have the features i liked (not naming them on purpose) and runs smoother

To tell you the truth I only want Live Wallpapers to have a tangible thing to brag to my Iphone friends about and show them even more things their phone is lacking. But there is no way i would keep a live wallpaper on past the first day it comes out.

I agree with you but I am hoping they are not doing this 2.1 lite version because they want it to run on other Android phones that might not be able to handle it and just want one version on 2.1 out there rather than having to support two.

I second this. I work for a large company that routinely is working on software updates for our products. the amount of regression testing that is required for any software change is mind boggling.

To try and compare the speed of an update from a company versus what the devs/modders provide is wholly innappropriate. Devs/modders can get by with the simple "I am not responsible if this in any way screws up your phone" message - the company that actually manufactures the hardware cannot. It also seems that people are much more willing to let minor software annoyances slide with a modded ROM.

I installed the Sholes 2.0.2 mod and, while on the whole it is a very good package, there were too many drawbacks for me. Personally, I didn't see these HUGE increases in speed from overclocking that people seem to be having (I tried both 800 MHz and 1GHz). While my phone did seem somewhat "snappier" it definitely was not an OMG this is amazing difference. That, along with the many Force Closes I was experiencing doing routine things was enough for me to go back to stock and await the official 2.1 update.

Launcher and the new app drawer were one of the biggest culprits of Force Closes and, if Motorola decided to leave them out for now because they couldn't resolve these issues in a timely manner, then that is a good thing! A lot of you need to take your pick: buggy software released quickly; stable software released somewhat quickly but missing a few features or stable software with all the features you want released much more slowly. Your not going to get it all with an official release from a manufacturer.

I doubt that is the case - remember that most of Motorola's other phones are running MotoBLUR anyway - which is a completely different UI from Stock Android. IF they left out any features I am willing to bet it is because of stability issues. Can you imagine the outcries if they included the new launcher and it was as buggy as it seems to be on the N1?? The flames on forums like this would most likely be,

wait for it....

wait for it....

LEGENDARY!!

Could not agree with you more!! Very well put

The flaming has started! It is against the 2.1 update, go read all the other 2.1 threads, if you have read all of them and have been active in the reading of those posts you will see the "glass is half empty" attitude in them all.

The only flaming going on is against 2.1, motorola, google and verizon, even the mods here get no love!

If you want 2.1 now, root your phone and dont look back, if you want to wait for the official update then do it! Makes no sense complaining about things NO ONE here REALLY knows about!!

This is the first phone that I have that has gotten OTA updates! All my other phones didnt get jack so I am pleased with this phone and will be pleased with any and all OFFICIAL updates I receive.

Rooting is cool and OC is cool till it cooks something or messes up and bricks the phone, then I suppose there will be complaints made to verizon what a POS phone the Droid is!

EVERYONE will NEVER be satisfied. it just can't be done, but You got it man. This is by far the best phone I've ever had. :icon_ banana: AFAIC it beats the iPhone. And this phone is in it's infancy. I can't wait to see what's down the road for the Droid. :motdroidvert:
