****Official FroYo Rollout Thread-Version2!****

OK... I am basically ready to do the manual update. Mainly because I'm interested in the full 70+ meg file that does a complete reinstall to clean things up. I also did the 2.1 update manually, so I'm comfortable with the process.

Here is my question... and bear with me, as I'm still a n00b to the OTA update process...

I manually update to 2.2. Whenever the OTA decides to deliver, I don't need it, so VZW doesn't "deliver" it to me. When Part 2 of the update comes in the next weeks/months, will the system check to see what version I have and offer the next update or assume that since I didn't take 2.2 then I am not a "candidate" for the OTA and not even poll my phone?

Hopefully the question makes sense and is a bit clearer than mud. I'm all for the manual update as it looks like most folks have had success with it... plus I'd like to clean up the orphans on my phone a little bit, and it sounds like the large file update will do a good job of that.

I see your reasoning, your saying Verizon would use your history of denying the OTA and skip you because it thinks your still running 2.1? In my opinion they wouldnt do that, they would instead just send a command to the droid for firmware version and see its 2.2 then send you the new build.

i tried to manually update mine 3 days ago.. did the hold X and power.. volume and camera, then went down to install update.zip, then got "E: cant's open/ cache/recovery/command" so the Droid-life page said just hit reboot phone. now i dont have the update because it wouldnt work, and still no OTA update... what do i do?????????

where did you download the file from? Did you put it in the root of your SD card?

Still waiting on my OTA update in the Twin Cities. I've been running Froyo for a couple months now but went back to 2.0.1 using the SBF files last week and then manually updated to 2.1u1 after that.

I'm in Dillon, SC, and I got the update on my phone around 7:30 this morning. It didn't take long at all (maybe 5 minutes), but I realized once I got to work that the vibration function doesn't seem to be working at all. It goes from the lowest volume setting to the vibrate icon, with no setting for silent. So now vibrate = silent? It's already been quite annoying...it's "Droid"'d about a dozen times already this morning, but I can't turn the sound off without worrying about missing a call!

Any else having this problem or have any advice?
The sound>vibrate>silent feature was disabled due to the complaints of too many users accidentaly putting their phone on silent. The only way to do this now is either manually go into the settings everytime you put it on silent, or you can just disable notifications in the sound setting and the droiding will stop.
Thanks for the info, but can I actually put the ringer on vibrate, or is that option just gone now? Turning off the notification sound is great, but I'd prefer to have the ringer on vibrate than alert everyone in my office that I've got a personal call!

So Sad....will the manual update work for Droid X?

DROID 1 ONLY!

This has been answered many, many times. Hook himself answered it when he said there was no OTA for the X. I wish to stress this so you, and other X owners, don't try to install it, have the install fail, and then panic. :)

Last I heard everybody was supposed to get Froyo by August 18, with a later update for Flash. Here it is August 18, and my Droid is still on 2.1. What's the issue? Anyone else still living with 2.1 or did Verizon just forget about me?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say no, but I could be wrong. It's been known to happen before. :)

Make sure you have it named update.zip and not update.zip.zip. Install Astro if you haven't already, open it, go to sdcard/ and see if the file reads update and not update.zip. Astro automatically assigns file extensions, so if you see update.zip for the file on the root of your SD card (sdcard/), you'll need to renamed it update and then try again. Good luck and if you have any further problems, let us know so we can try to help.

If I don't get it today I'm manually updating :icon_eek:.

Note my post above. I got the OTA this morning and it was the smaller file. What's with that, I thought they switched to the larger file update????

Chris

No, the larger file would have cost them more to push out (bandwidth usage) than the smaller file, even with the higher instances of phones they'd end up replacing. Also, the same logic applies to why most of the updates go out overnight -- less business and personal bandwidth usage, so less hit to their revenue stream. The larger file works better, but it's up to the savvy end user to use it instead.

Well finally got the OTA at 11:30am in Ohio.....Seemed slugglish but read a few people did a reboot, and yep that fixed the sluggishness. Loving it so far!! :icon_ banana:

Ok first what is the actual update file named? If you renamed it as update.zip then it will be update.zip.zip. You need to name it just update then the file being a zip will automatically add it. Next connect your phone and open up the SD card. Place that file into the SDcard home and dont put it in any folder withing the sdcard. You should see it at the very bottom after all the folders. Then reboot and install it using the recovery mode.

Manually updating will not: void your warranty; exclude you from future updates; root your phone; end world hunger; make peace in the Middle East; decide definitively which came first, the chicken or the egg; keep cats from yowling in the middle of the night when they're in heat and you're trying to sleep; cure baldness; give you free coffee at Starbucks; or increase your gas mileage.

It will; update your phone to the current official 2.2 build in such a manner that Verizon won't know the difference unless you tell them. Then the only issue is if the tech/rep is an idiot, misinformed, or lazy.

I hope this has answered your question and the questions of others. :)

Of course you can still put the ringer on vibrate. Just hit the volume button all the way down like you would before the update.
