Often imitated, never duplicated! Focused 1.8.6

My Experience With 1.8.6

Ok, I've been running 1.8.6 for about 18 hours now and I wanted to write a little update. Maybe some of the info will help people out.

1. Made a full backup of 1.6 with Bootstrap
2. Rebooted and charged my phone COMPLETELY to 100% -left on charger a little extra too.
3. Boot in Clockwork Recovery
4. clear battery statistics
5. Clear dalvik cache
6. Wipe Data
7. Wipe Cache
8. Install 1.8.6 from SD
9. Reboot
10. Link Google Account
11. Install only the essential apps - Bootstrap, Rom Manger, Root Explorer
12. Reboot/ Run for a while to make sure everything is stable.
13. Install other important apps - SetCPU, Astro, Watchdog, Quadrant, Y5, Barcode scanner
14. Reboot/ Run for a while to make sure everything is stable
15. Install high-connectivity apps ONE AT A TIME - Facebook, Gmail
16. Reboot / Run for a while to check stability
17. Install all regular apps
18. Reboot / Check stability
19. Install Blackbar mod
20 Reboot check stability
21. Installed Launcher Pro - set up the way I like it
22. Reboot / Check stability
23. .bak ADW
24. Install Autostarts - configure
25. Reboot - check stability

Since doing this I have been running for ~18 hours without a charge, including 3-4 of continuous use while setting everything up last night and texting/browsing today. I am at still at 50% battery.

I haven't had a single FC. Not even battery manager.

The X is faster, smoother, snappier, and cleaner than I have ever seen it.

Quadrant scores of ~1400 with no Overclocking or Undervolting.

Important Notes to take away from this:

1. I charged the battery completely before clearing battery stats - I think this might be important for some of your having battery problems.

2. Cleared all the other caches too. If you have a back up there's no reason not to.

3. Did not use Titanium Backup to reinstall hundreds of apps at once. Really you're just asking for crap if you do this. Your google account will remember the apps' you've paid for, there's not reason not to start fresh.

4. Checked stability at every level. Period. I would know what was causing problems when they started happening.

5. Installed important apps first. Then usability apps. Then high connectivity apps. Then regular apps.

6. Did not change launchers immediately. Drod designed this ROM with ADW in it. LPP has been working perfectly btw, but I didn't run it from the start to keep from causing possible problems.

7. Did not start theme-ing immediately. I let it work at every level before applying any theme stuff, blackbar, LPP, etc.

7. Ran Autostarts Last. Your phone is going through enough processes getting this ROM working initially. Using something like Autostarts right off the bat is asking for problems.

I really feel if most people took the time and patience to set up your new ROM carefully and intelligently the first time around 90% of the problems people are having wouldn't be an issue.

Wow. Nice step-by-step. Thank you for the great detail. While I must say that I believe you go a little overboard on some things, the majority of it certainly makes sense. In particular, I think wiping the battery stats at FULL CHARGE is a good thing to take away from this. I think when I wiped it, my battery was at like 20-30%. That might be why I saw issues yesterday with a full charge lasting 9 hours. I'm going to try wiping stats tonight after I charge fully. I must point out though that the quadrant score you are achieving is quite simple. I did almost the complete opposite of what you did, including themeing with a custom theme from the get-go, and I get 1400 without overclocking as well along with 0 FC's. All the same, this is a great guide and I will be going back and checking what I did versus what you suggest :)

I probably did go a bit overboard, but I like to be thorough and it has worked out well.

I'm certainly no android expert. I figured out the battery thing by reading about a lot of people having problems like yours after putting a new ROM on the Incredible and that was the solution.

I wasn't trying to say that my quadrant score was amazing or anything, just showing my results. I'm hoping for much better than that with jrummy's app but I haven't done it yet. I'm going to let the ROM run for a few days and make sure there are no problems before I try it.

This is just how I went about it, and the whole process was super smooth.

How can I go about erasing the batt stats and the dirty ratio?

****might**** throw a patch together with some stuff at some point.. only issue, is it *could* cause issues for some people.. and I'd really like to make sure that things are stable before tons of people go crazy with performance mods that may or may not help...

How can I go about erasing the batt stats and the dirty ratio?

To wipe battery stats:
Boot into clockwork recovery and use the advanced menu to wipe your battery stats.

To adjust the dirty ratio:
Currently it doesn't appear that the sysctl.conf file is actually being applied, so simply adjusting the values in there won't do anything. You will need to run a script in a terminal emulator which will reset every boot until it's worked in permanently. You can do this by typing in terminal emulator:

su
echo 60 > proc/sys/vm/dirty_background_ratio
echo 95 > proc/sys/vm/dirty_ratio

where 60 and 95 represent the percentage value you wish your ratios to be set at.

Edit: What Sephtin said. Do at your own risk :)

Thank you to you and sephtin for your replies .....this may be a little over my head but there's only one way to learn

[*]Syscontl.Conf tweaks (Credit to me/Pete)

does drod know his syscontl.conf tweaks aren't being applied? isn't that kind of a big deal?

I've brought it to his attention, yes. Though since you copy and pasted that, I'm wondering if the reason isn't simply due to a typo somewhere? The actual file is called sysctl.conf not syscontl.conf. If it is looking for syscontl.conf it will never find it...

Edit: tried renaming it to syscontl.conf but it still didn't take so it's not that :)

First, amazing ROM. This is my first post but for all those thinking about it, it is the best out there. Nice job Drod.

Seph - you do an amazing job helping and adding to the ROM. As do all.

ANyway, quick (hopefully not stupid) question. I can seem to figure out how to get the 3G Hot spot. I don't see it in the apps. I was on 1.6, tried to upgrade without wipe, couldn't find it. So I wiped then reapplied 1.8.6 Still no luck. I miss something?

Very smart. Super methodical. Kudos to you sir. Most people don't have the patience i think.
