Swype Android Beta!!

Swype | Text Input for Screens is the only way i could describe it lol

nah i had the "alpha" swype and it had 4 different keyboards to go through.

There was the standard one with the letters, then the one with the numbers slightly askewed.

Then AFTER that keyboard there was another one that actually had the numbers in correct alignment like a number pad of a phone with some other things on the side.

Then AFTER that one ever there was like an editing key board with arrows, select mode, page up,down and what not.

I really liked the editing and number pad keyboards.

wish i took screen shots.

Swype from the "Swype i" to "sym" for the edit screen. And swype from "Swype i" to "F" for the calculator screen.

excellent!

where did you fins that info anyway?

No backdoor required. Most likely explanation is that the "leaked" version was an evaluation version with a built-in expiration date. That's a common practice. Whether Swype was aware of or behind the leak is anyone's guess. But if it was intentional the tactic clearly backfired.

The beta availability is obviously an effort to regain control of the proliferation of the software outside Swype's control while not setting off a firestorm of bad PR.

True, but like Frankie said above, if they decide to cancel the beta, we have to look for another "leaked" version.

I tried all the fixes and still can't get it to work. every time i reboot it tells me that i have limited function. For the hell of it, I force close Swype and tried it again and it worked. but only till the next reboot. then i have to FC it again. I guess thats why this is the beta version. might have to go back to the leaked version.

It will be interesting to hear if you have that option. I'm guessing you don't.

you're right, guess i'm stuck with the beta for now. i'll just have to do a FC after i reboot. hopefully they address this soon.

Yea what the @#&*$#?!?! Do the Swype developers not know that the people willing to run a Beta, or even know that it exsits for that matter, are the same people that root and mod their Droids!?

You seem to be under the impression that Swype is releasing a beta version of android users as a service to those users. That's not the case. It's obvious that it's an effort to (a) avoid a huge spate of bad publicity when the "leaked" version of the software expired and (b) provide Swype with a fairly accurate list of users running their software.

They have no interest in supporting those that "root and mod their Droids." They have enough issues to deal with in providing software that works relatively seamlessly with the near infinite combination of applications that are running on stock Android devices.

The folks at Swype have been pretty straightforward about all this. They are engineering a product that they hope will be able to serve as input software for virtually any application running on the devices they support. For the Android platform that is a daunting task for a small company with limited support staff.

What they have decided to do is to provide the software to a limited number of users who can provide feedback about the performance of their software for an unstated period of time. If you don't like that approach you're more than welcome to ask them to return the money you've paid for the privilege. Oh, wait...

So far so good. Having to type the "old" way just to enter my email and password to finish installation had me shaking like a crack addict. :) I tried to Swype and realized it wasn't there.

I'm glad there's an option to turn off vibration, which was immediately obnoxious.
I wouldn't mind if you could tone the vibration strength down.

Swype certainly wins in portrait mode over the regular keyboard, but I think it would be great if we could choose to use the standard android keyboard while in landscape. I personally find Swype not as useful in landscape mode and standard typing to by much faster. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Works great here. No issues at all. New version is simply great. Be sure to uninstall the earlier version completely first also you have to turn on the swype keyboard back on

You might want to register on the Swype forum and let them know about your opinion of the "vibration" along with any other issues you find. At the moment the forum is overwhelmed by comments about problems in downloading the software but that's likely to settle down. And when it does Swype is looking for bug reports and suggestions for enhancements.

Note previous comment about the Swype forum for that sort of suggestion. As a workaround, you can select a different input method on a case by case basis when you go to landscape mode.

Yea, I know that we could do that but I was just saying it would be a nice feature to have two separate input settings rather than having to switch them in portrait vs. landscape mode. I've been using Swype since the leaked version first came out and I have not used the landscape mode ever since :-(

YAY for the forum, my Swype blew up this morning and I went online and low and behold.....there you are talking all about it. I have registered for the beta and can't wait to get it!!!

Has anyone had the old swype expire?

I forgot about the fact that I was running SmokedGlass v4.5 and I tried uninstalling my previously installed leaked copy. Couldn't find it, wasn't in Astro...so I clicked the link in the email, and after I rebooted the phone, now it says "Swype Your trial period has ended. Please upgrade your copy of Swype"

Now...I can't use the beta version, and the one in SG 4.5 is disabled.

Should I reinstall the SG rom? I wonder if this permanently disabled the included version in SG...

I have the same issue. Running Smoked GLass 5. Cant seem to find out how to uninstall the old, expired version.
