[Updated] Verizon Plans To Eliminate 'Grandfathered' 3G Unlimited Data Plans

You'd think they would learn from netflix disaster.
In my opinion netflix wasn't that bad, its only $8, plus if you want any dvds/blurays out its 10 more. Hell people pay way more for cigarettes and coffee in a week. But that's another discussion for another time.

This whole fiasco only affects us only when we upgrade
Like the others have said maybe we can get around this by buying the phones either at retail, or 3rd party.

Also for those on unlimited 4g whose unlimited will run out when their contracts do its not hard math. Buy retail priced phones from websites or from eBay to avoid upgrading your handset through verizon and you will save more money in the long run and will not be technically upgrading your contract with vzw therefore you keep unlimited 4g.

Is this true? If I never use another upgrade then they can't change my plan and I stay grandfathered? Once my contact is up wouldn't they be allowed to force me to do what they want? And Considering that Netflix and blockbuster are apps on our phones and there is no certainty there will be wifi wherever we are, who are you people to say what I should do with my unlimited data? I should be allowed to steam as many Netflix movies I want wherever iam regardless of whether there is wifi there or not. The wifi on campus sucks so when i'm chillin watching something, I use 4g so it's not buffering every 2 seconds.

It is obvious that everyone doesn't read all the posts before responding. I read through most of them, skipped the duplicate responses. They wont switch you mid contract!!

I agree that I like the unlimited data, though I use wifi when I can so I average 1-2G a month. Max was 3.5G when I first got a droid.

However I have been bugging VZW for a family share plan for years! I finally moved my wife to a pay as you go unlimited on Tmobile for $50/mo. Yes they throttle after a few hundred MB, but she uses wifi and hasn't gone over. The coverage is about 85% of VZW, there is a difference. Saving the $ was the main reason for the switch.

If the family data plans are reasonable I may bring her back on my plan. My biggest concern is the tiered pricing. They came up with the 2G for $30 because the average user uses 2G and they want more $. They are a business, but keep in mind texting and email has dropped cell minute usage a ton!

Just a few years ago I remember $80 plans for 300 minutes with no data and crappy service. If they can come up with the right balance I think this might work in most peoples favor!

For those using there phone for home internet, consider the VZW internet service hotspot device.

A 4-5G plan for $30-40 a month would fit my family fine, as my kids get older it would be more like 5-8+G but I would expect a $50-$60 cost for that. Just compare 4 plans unlimited at $30 each, you can expect they want to make some money from it.

My fear is the family plans will be $50 for 2-3G or something stupid like that.

I think that is only an assumption/hope at this point. If it is like we think, their goal is to rope in all the iphone 5 customers who will be getting their first 4G device later this year, but on the other hand, there is nothing to stop them from flagging all accounts on month-to-month unlimited 4G and calling us up to say "Your current data plan is no longer as possible option and we will be changing it".

I'm sitting here at secretary of state waiting on someone & i'm about to stream some **** right now lol. I'll prolly use a couple gigs, too, considering how long they take. Oh effin well. It's what I pay for.

Yep or simply discount on new devices!!!!

haha This is why I feel some detachment between citizens... We are talking about private property and it is up to them to do their business as they see fit.. Gone is the day where competitions are good and now they all set the same standard and it is up to the consumers to choose what's available. There are no laws that required competing companies to set price differently, what's not allowed is that owners/CEOs of the responsible parties can't get together in a secret meeting and talking about monopolizing the target market. The numbers of millionaires/entrepreneurship with good value of doing what's right to challenge existing corporations are diminishing rapidly. Good example is Billionaire Telco Mogul of Carlos Sim.

I paid full retail when the Razr came out in Nov as a pre-emptive strike against such a move, so I'm not thrilled about any changes to unlimited data. That said, I'm going to keep my powder dry and will wait for an official announcement, especially to see exactly how this will affect those of us who already have unlimited 4G plans.

On another note, I keep reading about how some of you plan to jump to Sprint. VZW could care less - they will keep rolling in the $$$ with or without you. The vast majority of the population doesn't care about this. It's mainly those of us who are 'gadget geeks' who care and we are a very very small percentage of VZW's customer base. My prediction is that very few who talk about jumping to Sprint will actually do it, and many of those who do will come back eventually due to poor coverage and/or extremely slow data. VZW knows this - they aren't stupid.

Bottom line, it sucks, but it is what it is. Welcome to 2012.

Depends on the state. VZ may be great but it lacks pending what state and county you're in. And I personally don't care what VZ thinks about me switching. Lol

Just came across this article: 7 reasons to shred your wireless contract and switch to pre-paid | Android and Me

Found it somewhat pertinent to this discussion.

Number 7 really caught my eye - I wish VZW would do this exact plan. $30/month for 100 talk minutes, unlimited text, and "Unlimited" "4G" data (throttled over 5GB) is pretty much the ideal plan for me as I hardly ever talk due having an office phone and a cox land-line that is virtually free in my bundle and I hardly ever go over 3gb of data but even if I'm on a high usage month I wouldn't have to worry about overages, just generally slow connection.

Edit: Just saw this link, too: http://www.droid-life.com/2012/05/1...cy-changes-when-we-get-closer-to-shared-data/

From what my understanding is any 4g phone user is safe from.getting it taken away
Yeah your safe until you upgrade your phone.

As stated a long time ago by verizon: when upgrading you will have to pick a plan that is currently available (offered) at the time of upgrade.

Seems everyone forgot that this was said in a statement January 2011.
