[Updated] Verizon Plans To Eliminate 'Grandfathered' 3G Unlimited Data Plans

Yeah your safe until you upgrade your phone.

As stated a long time ago by verizon: when upgrading you will have to pick a plan that is currently available (offered) at the time of upgrade.

Seems everyone forgot that this was said in a statement January 2011.

But can you really go off of something they said a year ago when less 6 months ago people were still being told they would always be grandfathered in with unlimited data if they had it at that point? They are not required to stand by anything they say beyond what is in the contract we sign and then only for the 2 year duration of that contract. After that point, all bets are off.

As with most of you, I'm a little upset about the death of unlimited.

If I switch from Verizon, it isn't to show them that they lost a loyal customer..... I know that they are not going to notice my jumping ship. I think you should always look around when your contract expires.

I've also seen a lot of posts about who is to blame - the 10gb users or if verizon is targeting the 2 - 4gb users. I don't think anyone is to blame. Verizon knows what you're using. For the low end users, especially the 2gb, they will not be affected especially if the tier's are going to be about the same as they are now. Their 30 dollars will get them their 2 gb of data. I hope they offer everyone reasonable options for data. I'm currently on 4g so I should be good for 2 years, but my wife was looking to upgrade in October, so we'll have to see how it all works out. I'm not going to go crazy until I see some prices. The sad thing is that I could see Verizon raising the overall prices of the Data packages. If they don't do it hand in hand with the rollout, I say give it a year and we'll see some more changes.

For now my RAZR and I will continue on our happy relationship (dragging along Verizon)!

:p:p:p at Verizon... so Sneaky in a way. Shared data plan just like Shared minutes... ok good! but here is the thing... if they are still doing promo of double your data.... of what others are saying and this will benefit those that are already under tiered prices and under Family plan. Just like many also said that data numbers are vary within family... you might use 4GB while your bro/sis/wife/husband only use 1GB of data... so if you paid $60 dollars why not combined those 4GB into one and become 8GB to be shared within that family? This way you can go beyond 4GB that your other half not using. Here is the scenario tho for us Grandfathered into this for family plan users... Like for me with 2 smartphones in my Family shares... Would I pay $50 for 5GB w/ double your data promo of 10GB or stick with $60 of Unlimited data.... My choice are still clear tho.. I rather pay $10 extra for Unlimited. At the end this will not benefit old Costumers that been with Verizon for decades. This to me is the likeliest scenario of what Verizon will do in the future.

I don't think the blame gamers about Data hogging are not clear enough for you. You are right about Verizon knowing and monitoring your usage, but what people didn't know back then was that you can go beyond 5Gb, where people made phone calls to Verizon to confirm that Unlimited means Unlimited unlike AT&T; an explosion of data happened. Flood gate of users that used to be minority that dare to go beyond the limit while majority feared of getting cut by the network now are doing the same thing. Once you know... wouldn't you take advantage of it? Verizon are doing damage control of sealing that floodgate from flooding forever! This is why people are angered as you should keep it in a hush up :icon_ lala:.

I am not arguing with you tho as I agree with you that we Costumers shouldn't do blame game with each other, instead, we should unite. We been selfish by ignoring new implementations as they only happen to newbies and we keep on saying .. screw them as long as it doesn't affect me... I'm cool with it.

I will not look at my speedometer just to avoid a speeding ticket from vzw. I will give up the luxury of a smartphone all together and use a small cheap tablet to hit wifi when I can.

The part that really really chaps my ass is that I can't keep my Rezound without a data plan.

And a big thank you goes out to those bragging about using upwards of 100GBs a month of data on unlimited plans.

Bingo, and a big "I told you so" to all the people that I have been telling that this was gonna happen for the past 12 months, that didn't believe me. I have had this argument uncounted times, as they sat there smugly in their "I am grandfathered in Unlimited"... When VZW started talking about throttling Unlimited plans after 2GB of usage, they still maintained that it would never happen.

And here we are. LOL

Since it seems like its going to happen i will be interested to see if my data is as fast the second half of my billing cycle as it is the first half. For some reason it isnt right now. Call it what you will.

I should have been more specific. I meant the bragging in the forums isn't what caused this to happen. The Verizon executives were already licking their chops at the money to be made from anyone using over 2gb of data whether it was 10 or 100. We are definitely on the same page!

I think that is only an assumption/hope at this point. If it is like we think, their goal is to rope in all the iphone 5 customers who will be getting their first 4G device later this year, but on the other hand, there is nothing to stop them from flagging all accounts on month-to-month unlimited 4G and calling us up to say "Your current data plan is no longer as possible option and we will be changing it".

damn iphone! lol

I feel bad for the Verizon reps. They don't make the policies yet judging by this thread and from other people I've talked to, they'll get the brunt of the wrath. When my contract expires I'll just go over to Sprint if they still have unlimited. Not only that, but Sprint has night and weekends that start at 7, free mobile to mobile to any mobile number, and cheaper text.

I don't don't know how other people do it, but for me I just don't see how it is possible to use 4g and use less that 20 gigs a month.. 10 if I used my phone like 3 days a month. 4g sucks down data like it sucks down battery. I don't know how anyone could stay under 10 gigs let alone 4 or 5

Um... I'm usually under 2gb, and often under 1. Apparently someone watched WAY too much video... and you wonder why they want to cap us?

On the OP post, they seriously may lose me as a customer even though I just upgraded to a Rezound... and they will not be charging me any ETF if they try to force this change before my contract is up. If they wait until the contract is up... maybe. But they are still renigging on their promise of being grandfathered in and being able to keep the plan. THAT is unacceptable. I don't care that I don't usually use more than 2gb in a month... I was promised to be grandfathered in to the unlimited plan. I hate to leave Verizon, but if they try to push this on me, I will be seriously looking around. Which sucks, cause Big Red really does have the best network :/

Let's keep up the pressure and maybe they will backtrack permanently.

Dude, they won't. Seriously, get over it. This has been a long time coming, everyone knew that the industry itself was going this way. You can kick and scream but the inevitable is just that... Sprint won't stay Unlimited for ever. They will follow suit when they see that they can do so and still make tons of money like everyone else does.

To the dude claiming it is hard to not go over 20GB a month, I think that if you are some kid that lives on their phone rather than going out and having a real life, possibly... I mean, if you watch Netflix for a couple hours a day, that would do it, but don't you have a laptop, PS3 or PC for that?

Like everybody else, I hate the idea of losing my unlimited plan. This is a response by VZ because of the exponential explosion of data usage. With 4G it's only going to increase even more. Between business and personal use, I'm sure it's straining their network. Going to a tiered system is the easiest way to curb this use, because they for the most part don't have to do anything because we will police ourselves not wanting to pay any overage.

The posts I've read in the this thread talk about their usage being anywhere between .5 to 100 gbs. I'll bet most (if not all) of the people in this forum have single or dual core phones. How much data do you think we can consume when we start buying the quad-cores (or when the octal and then hex) core phones come out? Once this data explosion started about 2 years ago, all the carriers knew this would be coming. This is their response to it since it may level off usage (at least for some time) for them to continue working on their networks. All the carriers are free to set whatever charges they want. How many of us would walk away from the convenience of these devices and go back to what we used to use? Who here will give up their phone and go buy a Tom-Tom and an mp3 player and and portable radio (if you can even find one of them) and a e-reader?
