[Updated] Verizon To Officially Reveal Tiered Data Plans July 7th; Plans Leaked Below

You're right. Leave it unlimited for everyone, included everyone new coming onto the system. With all of the new smartphone users. Don't worry about that. But don't complain when calls and data start dropping left and right.

If they don't have the system to support the crap they are trying to sell, then don't try to sell it.

I think that's a, unfortunately, larger fundamental problem with this industry. It's a constant tug-of-war between what can be handled, what will beat the competition, what will sell the most...

Speaking as a non-tethering user of 5-8GB a month, I'm screwed. With these plans it almost makes more sense for me to get a 7" tablet and a pay as you go phone because I use less than 100 minutes per month on average.

There may be some aspect due to unauthorized tethering, but I think this is a precursor to what the 4G speeds will be capable of. We've already seen people admit on here about using a tethered phone rather than a hardline at their house. Imagine how many more people would be doing that with the high speed of the 4G. It WOULD become a problem. Does everyone really think this data is unlimited as far as systemwide capacity? People, use some logic. There is only so much the system and towers can transfer without shutting down. That is a straight up fact.

Why is it so many are unwilling to accept this reality?

I understand but then why" falsely advertise" UNLIMITED??...but quick question, my contract is about over and was wondering if I don't renew it and keep on with out one, but buy a phone at retailm will I still have unlimited data?

That seems to still be a grey area right now. Initial reading seems to indicate we'll at least get two more years grandfathered, but that isn't confirmed by any measure.

Alas, I'm out of here. I've got to actually work today. I've said my peace. Thanks for those that read it and tried to understand what I'm saying. Go ahead and go off on the rant sessions now.

If Virgin Mobile is strong in your area... $25 for 300 minutes and unlimited data/text... it's no Verizon but they have a few solid phone options and it's awfully cheap (Sprint's towers).

It's also about companies that refuse to upgrade their lines and then complain about that the lines are being taxed too much. Kinda like one of the oil companies, make 80 billion profit but can't maintain their pipeline. It's not that they can't keep up with what everyone wants, but that would require money, but then when they get the money they don't want to give it up. It's all about money. This whole tiered data is about money, nothing more, they see a way of making alot more money off people because they know they can. Why? Because all the other cell companies are doing it.

What if tiered family plans were higher GB's for about the same price as single lines? I was thinking of switching to a family plan just to have more than 1 phone. if that happens i would switch in a heart beat. This is my post from another thread about my data use:

I checked my actual usage and starting with the Droid 1 I hit 1.8GB , 970MB and 570MB before getting the Droid X. That was using chrome to phone alot and downloading ROM's and apps alot at work, used to look at Youtube going to and from work, used to browse the forums alot on my phone.

Since going to the Droid X my usage dropped to the 100MB-500MB range. That was also the time I got tired of doing the ROM thing with the Droid 1 and when my X became my main phone. I also got alot more busy at work. I also dont use the web alot anymore.

Also, where I moved to recently doesnt have good reception so I have to use Wifi at home. Didnt have to do that before. That dropped my data usage alot too.

Since then I signed up for Netflix. At home would be a waste to use it on any phone or tablet. I can just hook up my PS3 in the bedroom. (The living room has a Blu Ray player than I can use Netflix on) and call it a day. I did try it on my Droid X1 over wifi and it was nice. Was looking at a movie in the bathroom on my phone, but....it was over wifi.

Yea....with LTE and services like Netflix....if unlimited was to be really gotten rid of...I see ppl either paying overages alot, getting the higher priced plans which IMO isnt worth it, ppl not using the services, or ppl looking for better deals from other carriers. Sprint sucks in my area so for me its either Verizon or AT&T.

I wonder why no unlimited data plan but at a higher price? I would pay $50 for that no problem. I might could see myself paying the $50 for 5GB. For me you might as well call it unlimited based on my usage.

It is understandable that VZW would have to do something to prevent unlawful tethering in replace of a hardline at home but this is not the way to do. If this was the sole motif behind the policy change, then VZW could have just capped data at 10GB a month (or something similar). It will be pretty obvious who is using tethering as a replacement to a hardline, and VZW could just implement a new policy to prevent that from happening without punishing those who use data legitimately.

You what would suck, if $30/2gb was for a family share, BUT only first phone is free and then each other phone costs an additional $5-10 to share taht 2 gigs. Kinda like minutes. The 450 min/month for $45 (or whatever) is for one phone. You have to pay $10 more to share those minutes with another number.

That type of BS will pee some people off.

When is the "emperor has no clothes" moment coming?

Text message charges are a complete scam.
Paid tethering is a complete scam.
Now these ridiculous prices for even basic data?

I would love nothing more for Verizon, AT&T and the rest of them to just die a painful death, but the thing is - they have us by the balls. What can we do to fight this? Nothing. All the major providers collude and get away with it because they bribed (sorry, "legally donated through lobbyist groups") half of Washington and now have a carte blanche to do anything they want.

@Beardface - people like you justifying this outrage are the problem, not the 1% tetherers (of whom I'm not even a part of).

Why did you quote something and then talk about a totally different subject?

Nothing you wrote has anything to do with jkhonea's rather logical assessment. If they don't cap the data people will fry the system by using 4G.

People who tether are not a major issue, you got to look at the big picture. It's got nothing to do with punishing anyone. It's got to do with having a system work without being overloaded. More and more people are buying smart phones and using data. It's easy to understand that 4G is using more data then 3G.

I don't know why that doesn't make sense to everyone.

Wow that's painfull!! My wife and I looked at our average for the year and we have never gone over 4gb, but then again never gone under 2gb. So now I'm going to have to pay almost double for my data... sheeesh!

If you two are on a family plan you'd get the 5 GB for $50, you'll actually pay less than what you're paying now.

Has this actually been confirmed? I know that they brought up the fact of tiered data for family plans, but i don't think that's what they quoted so far.

No, this was going off an assumption that the prices listed in OP could be shared on a family plan.
