[Updated] Verizon To Officially Reveal Tiered Data Plans July 7th; Plans Leaked Below

I'm running out my contract, not buying any more phones from Verizon.

The tiered data plans are part of the reason, but mainly the service is just way too expensive any more. Their total disregard for loyal paying customers is ridiculous, having to sign new 2 year contracts in order to get any kind of deal on a phone is insulting.

Especially since I can get unlimited 4G service so cheaply elsewhere, and phones cost under $100

Go to sprint or att and then come back and tell us your not getting what u paid for. Cheaper service means that company has less money to invest into a robust and reliable network. Stop being a drama queen.

Well said! I went to Verizon back in '97 because I got what I was paying for and that was service outside of the heart of a city's metro area of 4.5 million people. The funny thing is that now than I have moved to a much smaller city in retirement I still get good service and people here with ATT and Sprint get dropped calls are no connect all of the time. The funny thing is that back in the big city area ATT is still having problems after all these years and Sprint still has the same dead areas.

And I don't think they charge any less for their service. In addition, Verizon has 24/7 Customer support and excellent Customer service which I know att has neither.

If by good Customer Service service you mean having people factory reset their phone as the solution to all problems, and when that doesn't work, then just offer them a replacement that has barely been tested, then yes.

Well, I have to admit that I never needed them to tell me to do a factory reset but I have had them allow me to pick out a phone of my choosing b/c of multiple problems with the phone I had, have had them reverse charges that were legitimate without even asking them to, have had them walk me through a problem at 3 am, replace phones with no questions including one that I admitted to having water damage and have never one paid an activation fee, not even for my first phone. I know you will not get that kind of service from att.

A friend of mine, who had been with att for at least 10 years, 3 years over due for an upgrade, went to upgrade and was being charged an activation fee, he w4's so angry, he decided to put att through every test of Customer service that I might use Verizon for. As i needed Verizon, i would report and he would try the same with att, usually dissatisfied. His final straw was when he needed att after 11 pm and got prompt that he had to wait til next morning. I told him it never happens with Verizon. He didn't believe me. I called Verizon at midnight on speaker phone and asked the rep while he listened if they were available 24/7. She said sure are! He switched to Verizon the next day. That was about a year ago.

To this day he is amazed at his phone service (as in he never gets dropped calls like he had been so accustomed to) and Customer service compared to att.

We are spoiled by Verizon and have been accustomed to their service not knowing that to switch we would be in for a big unpleasant surprise.

I would do some serious thinking and comparing, as my friend did, before switching.

I have a Samsung Alias 2 an I've just added unlimited data to my plan so that I'm grandfathered in. I'm eligible for an upgrade in late August. Am I going to have a problem getting a 4G phone with unlimited data when I upgrade?

Update June 21st: Big Red’s executive director of corporate communications, Brenda Raney made the following email comment to AllThingsD confirming the July time-frame of this article, "We will move to a more usage based model in July. We’ll share more later." There is still no word yet on whether the leaked pricing plans are accurate, but there have been no denials either, which does not bode well.

This story just broke over at Droid-Life. Tiered data plans from Verizon has been one of the hottest and most controversial conversation topics over the last couple of months. After several stories it looks like we will finally get the full picture officially from VZW on or about July 7th. But, in the meantime, we can already be informed because the plans have been leaked. Here is the breakdown from the Droid-Life story quoted below:
Data plans:

2GB – $30/month
5GB – $50/month
10GB – $80/month

If you would like to add tethering on to any of those packages, you can purchase 2GB of data at an additional cost of $20 per month.

Data plans w/ tethering:

4GB – $50/month
7GB – $70/month
12GB – $100/month

If you go over your purchased amount of data, it will cost you $10 per 1GB.

Tablet data plans will now go to $30 for 2GB of data as well instead of $20 for 1GB of data that is currently available.

We have also been told that this is for both 3G and 4G smartphones and that there are not separate plans depending on device.
From the looks of this pricing it is about $5 bucks more per month than AT&T's plans. It's entirely possible that this could change before it is officially announced July 7th, but at least we have an idea now.

That's too expensive. I want more cheaper one.

When is Verizon going to announce all of these changes? I was hoping for some major clarity this week.

More info was posted in our intranet as of 6/25:

Existing lines of service that have the smartphone data plan of $29.99 are grandfathered in on or after July 7th, even if they are going from a 3G smartphone to a 4G smartphone (great news IMO).

The new data plans are for new lines of service (which includes an existing account adding an additional line{s}) activated on or after July 7th, or existing lines that are activating a smartphone on a line that has a feature phone on it (the $29.99 data for non-smartphones is not grandfathered to the unlimited smartphone feature), whether via upgrade or customer provided equipment.

Of course things can change by July 7th, however this is the most recent info gleaned from the VZW intranet, less than 2 hours ago. TBV
