[Updated] Verizon To Officially Reveal Tiered Data Plans July 7th; Plans Leaked Below

Is there a way to tell how much data I use each month right now? I'm curious now that these plans are coming out. There are other carriers that might not have coverage as good as Verizon but they get the better phones much earlier than Verizon and they have rates that are much cheaper.

Dial #3282 to check how much data you use.

Wifi. I didn't get a smartphone because Verizon is so awesome and I can't wait to use their network. I got it so I could have access to the internet, email and apps when I needed. I don't see the need to use 3g just because I can, when I have wifi all the time and its far faster...

Wifi isn't always available. At work I don't have access. When on the road I don't have access. I don't even have wifi at home.

bolded statement puts you in a small minority of smartphone owners. His logic will not apply to you.

^Yea some ISP's give you a wireless router/modem hybrid with their service. I understand everybody doesnt have home internet too. But for those that do a wireless router is cheap now.

I use up just under or over 5GB every month (no tether). I see some that only use 1/2GB or less. I don't see how you people do that. Why have smartphones then?? My sister and my mother use 1.5 to 2GB per month and I see them as below average users.

In fact if I got a 4G phone I could see my usage easily going up. People are gonna start letting app developers dish out 4 or 5 updates before they actually do the update. Also I wonder if OTA's count towards the plan.

I am available for upgrade on July 21 so either Verizon lets me upgrade a little early or I'm leaving the service in Nov. when my contract expires.

Cuz smartphones are more than just devices used for data. It is my music player, could be a video player if I take the time to learn what to do to get sound for some of my video clips, its a GPS, it can be for occasional internet use, better cameras, etc. Just because we have access to 3G, 4G doesnt mean we have to use the hell out of it to enjoy it.

There are times I am so glad I have a smart phone, even tho I dont use alot of data now. I still look at Youtube from time to time, but I dont do it alot. My kids mother doesnt use alot of data either, but she wants a better smartphone soon.

I know. I was just answering your question of "how do you people do it?"...that's how. Not everyone uses 3g and from the Nielsen numbers I would think many millions use wifi more so than 3g. That doesn't mean they shouldn't have a smartphone...

I use Wifi probably 10+ times more than 3G :)

I know this is a shocking idea, but can everyone please stop getting ready to jump off buildings until full details are revealed and all of this information is confirmed?

Why couldn't you think up this idea before I jumped?!?

Can someone tell me if a very good wifi connection would be faster than 4G?
Because I get WiFi a lot and I am not sure I even want 4G if it'd eat my battery along with my wallet.

Depends on your router and strength of the 4G signal. With my home wireless and broadband capable, I can pull about 35 mpbs. Think I have seen some numbers of about 20 mbps with 4G. That is also dependent on your home internet speed.

I wish I could break it down more scientifically by truly logging all of the data I consume at each place, but basically it works like this:

Work: 8 hours a day...always on my Employer's Wifi.
Home: roughly 4 hours a day of non-sleeping time, always on wifi.
Other: That leaves roughly 4 hours a day (if you assume 8 hours of sleep) to be outside on a 3G network gobbling up data.

I ONLY stream music while I'm on 3G because there's no reason to drain my battery on that while at work and I have better options at home. I watch some videos on my phone at work, but other than that it would all be texting/emailing/calling. Not a lot of data.

I guess it's possible I consume a total of 2-3GB of data, but only 1/4th of that is on Wifi. Maybe I'll log it scientifically someday.

After reading this on Droid Life earlier, I immediately had to go back and review the monthly data usage of myself and my husband since October. Neither of us have every gone above 1.5GB, and this is with using 3G most of the time. Now that I am home over the summer, I've been leaving my wifi on, so my usage is even lower now. I prefer doing web browsing on a computer, so unless there is a forum app (like the ones for Droid Forums and Droid X Forums), I rarely browse the web on my phone.

I do feel bad for the people who, for whatever reason, are not able to get wifi at their residence. I'd hate to have to watch every day to make sure I'm not nearing my limit.

So as it stands, this whole tier thing is not affecting me too much, so I'm not one of the ones throwing herself off of a tall building. My MAIN CONCERN is that whatever happens, I am able to keep my $20 per line data discount. So I guess we'll see where that goes.

+1...i'll never understand the utter shock that resonates across this forum when a company does something to increase their profits or protect their investments. but whatever.

and yeah its just rampant speculation and rumors, and i for one dont believe it until verizon says it, not when droid-life or p3droid tells me. but still, there's nothing wrong with discussing the possibility. the forum would be pretty boring if everyone just talked about verified stuff haha

I would say the point is why push 4G devices and their premium costs, or Netlfix apps if the data will be tiered? Most people can not afford the combination. If folks want to spin this that VZW just wants to make money, cool- but blaming tether users is nuts, since VZW can and has throttled heavy users.

VZW is simply paving the road for milking iPhone users that will bail from Att after this year, since a lot of contracts will be complete and folks will move to the iPhone 5 on VZW network- due to better coverage.

If the issue was heavy users, VZW can control that. VZW would be lying out their butts if they blames the changes to heavy users.

I don't think VZW has ever come out and blamed anyone have they? The blame stuff is all just forumspeak. I don't think VZW has to blame anyone, nor will they. They're looking to make a buck and they're doing that. All companies do it. Why is everyone so up in arms about this?

You gotta pay for what you want. This is not something unheard of or some new concept. It's been that way for hundreds of years. Do Jordans really cost $250? Do t-shirts with a company name on it really cost $50? It's just how it is. They're not going to give away their service, and why should they? They're not here to make the world a better place.

If you want to stream Netflix all day you gotta pay. You're using their network. If you want to stream 50GB of pandora a month you gotta pay. And if you want to replace your ISP with a cellphone company you have to pay.

I agree that the people who tether are not the sole cause of this, but I'm sure it had something to do with it. Do you think VZW is ok with letting people use 50GB of data when 99% don't even use 5GB? Why would the be ok with a couple of people using 10 times what 99% of their customers use and pay the same price? Why wouldn't they want to make some extra cash off those people? Again, I'm not saying the tiers are fair, they're probably not, but why are people surprised over this? Why would they be fair?

Nope, their CFO mentioned it as part of the reason, since he referred to "heavy users". Not sure what analyst call, but he did refer to the tiered data and heavy users as part of the reason.

Wifi does depend on the internet connection. Around here the 3G is faster than the isp. So 4G would blow it away in my area.

But really most Wifi spots should have 5-10mb down...that's plenty fast for streaming video and watching youtube.

I can understand why Verizon needs to do this no matter how much it pains me but honestly I feel that if they are going to move to tiered data they should get rid of the bloatware on Android phones. I also wish that they would move the lowest data point to 4GB because from my testing I find that I use 2GB each month quite easily. However I can safely say I will remain grandfathered into my unlimited for as long as I can hold off. If tiered ends up not working out however we could always just boycott data services for awhile. That would make them change it back.

Verizon Notifies Employees of Impending Tiered Data Plans in Letter

Not that we needed more confirmation on our exclusive report from this morning that tiered data plans are on the way from Verizon, but we have some for you. Employees are beginning to receive word of the changes from their regional VPs, who don’t necessarily get as specific as the dirty pricing details we revealed, but you’ll still get the point. This letter does re-confirm our original report that 3G and 4G pricing will be exactly the same though, which is one of the few positives we are seeing from these impending changes.
So yeah, “structured” plans are on the way – we’re just hoping they introduce family share versions alongside them to help ease this pain because this letter isn’t going to brighten anyone’s day around this site.
Letter after the break.
The Next Generation of Data Pricing – Our Evolution Amidst an Industry Revolution
June 20, 2011
Greetings team, it’s [redacted], your Area Vice President of Marketing and Sales Operations. As we approach the summer solstice, I wanted to reach out to the team and overview what I believe represents a significant and exciting evolution around how we package data solutions to our customers and the marketplace.
The Revolution is Upon Us…
In what has been a year of amazing performance by the [redacted] Area including company leading year-over-year churn improvement, successful introduction of the iPhone 4, strong post paid gross and net adds and industry leadership in launching our 4G LTE network; we find ourselves entering into a period of transformational innovation within Verizon Wireless and the wireless industry as a whole.
Our ability to out execute and deliver upon the promise of The Credo everyday has allowed us to maintain the industry leadership. At the same time, accelerated market expectations coupled with the introduction of many emerging solution categories has created new opportunities for us to meet and exceed the needs of our customers.
Data Pricing Evolution…The Present
Our legacy data pricing structure was designed to address a somewhat different customer need profile than what we are seeing and can expect in the future.
Consider this. Data usage has more than doubled over the last three years. Consumers and business users alike are doing more and more with their mobile devices. The notion of “send and end” has migrated to “managing multiple aspects of one’s lifestyle through mobility.” Whether it’s social media (85%+ of Smartphone users), mobile internet (88%+ of Smartphone users), or email/applications (71%+ of Smartphone users), this usage has one thing in common—dramatically increased demand for data and media consumption.
As a result, we are evolving our approach around how we package our data solutions and pricing to our customers. Coming soon, Verizon Wireless will move from our existing pricing format to a structure designed to allow customers to choose the right data solution that best aligns with their needs.
The Value Benefit Equation…
With the new usage based pricing plans, the vast majority of our customers will be able to enjoy their typical level of data consumption for the same value that they outlay today. Additionally, for those who have greater requirements for data, we will have solutions that they can tailor to their unique needs.
Perhaps more importantly, given our strong desire to continue to provide enhanced capability and value to our customers, the new data pricing will apply to both our 3G AND 4G LTE networks. So in essence, for those customers in our ever and rapidly expanding 4G LTE network coverage footprint, users will gain the benefit of the fastest and most advanced 4G LTE network in the U.S. all for the same usage based value. More speed. More functionality. Same value.
Let’s Do What WE Do…
Our expectation to extend our market leadership will be largely dependent on our demonstrated ability to “operationalize” in the face of an ever-changing environment. The successful launch of our new data pricing solutions represents a key milestone in our continued march to excellence.
Over the next few weeks, you will be receiving much more insight, information, and learning opportunities around this significant evolution in how we provide our industry leading best solutions, to the right customer, that best satisfies their needs.
I have every confidence in our ability to execute this flawlessly because it is the Verizon Wireless and South Area way. Our customers expect and deserve nothing less.
To paraphrase a quote from a favorite cinematic masterpiece of mine from the 80’s, Top Gun, “Verizon Wireless is engaged. The South Area has the lead…” Let’s do what we do.
Cheers desi!

how we package our data solutions

Did anyone else find this verbage funny? Like data is a PROBLEM, so they have to give us solutions...

I love how the letter drips with how much of a favor they are doing for the Verizon smartphone user. I'd truly be lost without them meddling, I mean, looking out for me...
