Verizon pulls Android 2.2 "FRG01b" update for DROID 1, future updates uncertain

Part of the problem is some of the Verizon reps don't know any more than we do on this forum, so they tell what they hear, and sell phones based on those same rumors... at times anyway. My local VZW store is good about saying "yeah we've heard that too, but don't know for sure", whenever I take something I've heard on here and ask them about it. But I've seen stories on here, and elsewhere, of people who were "promised" this and that, and it was only speculation.

That's true. When I had my Voyager I wanted to add FLO TV. That would add an additional $15 a month to the $15 data plan, but if I had the Data Plus plan, the total would be $25 a month (as opposed to $30). I asked the rep at the store if the change to the Data Plus would be automatic and they said "Yes." It wasn't.

Part of the problem is that the majority of the VZW stores are "authorized resellers" and not actual VZW stores. The independent stores seem to do barely better than the "authorized resellers", and I have yet to deal with anyone at an actual VZW store who knew more than "yeah, that's an awesome phone!" when asked anything. The "authorized resellers" never seem to know more than how much they're making per phone sale and what the price rates are.

My update to FRG01b gets worse and worse everyday!

I'm no longer able to connect to 3G network! It ONLY connects to MY wifi at home. Once I leave my home I have no connection at all. NO connection to my browser, the market, can't check my email, no google maps, no anything that requires my gps (like geocaching). It's become nearly useless to me unless I'm sitting in my living room!

And... being a newbie, I have no idea what to do, or how to go back to 2.1.

So what I'm hearing is they're incompetent ****wards and can't make the promised upgrade work.
And don't give me crap about they ain't obligated to blah blah blah. They said we'd get it and the reason we don't have it is because they can't make it work. Maybe they should have got it to work before telling us about how awesome our phones would be (including the Flash they told me I'd have in jan '10) when the update happened.

What we need to do is take to Twitter and Facebook and start bad mouthing Verizon. It's the only power we have.
I don't know about the rest of you but I don't like being told I'm buying something then find out it's not quite that then listen to people tell me I can't complain because it's still better than whatever.

Can you show me the actual, printed release notice from Verizon officially giving a date for the release of the OTA. Not what articles online have said, not what Jack's brother's, sister's, second cousin has said. The actual release from Verizon giving the actual date and release information. Because I have yet to see that.

I just made a phone call on my stock Droid 1 running 2.1, it worked fine.

Was the ability to do that ever in question ?
The only issue i ever had with phone quality was when using bluetooth headset the phone would cut out every 15 seconds, still does that.

My point is, a lot of you guys are extreme users and worry about stuff that 99% of the Droid users don't even understand Most people make phone calls, text, e-mail, use the internet and hit the penguin. We are not sitting on pins and needles waiting for the next update because for us, the droid is fine the way it is.

Ridley, while you're 100% right, a good chunk of this forum is made up of extreme users, otherwise the forum probably wouldn't even exist.

its sad that people on here and other sites can make custom roms from source that allow you to get past hulu's security to watch shows, and to play games but people that get paid to make updates can not make things work. SMH

That's true, but you have to keep something else in mind. The company's making official updates and such have to 1) worry about all encompassing operation of the software, not having the privilege of just making sure it will work on their one specific program or application and 2) have more stringent legal issues to keep in mind regarding operations of software tied to other companies. When individual are basically "hacking", neither of these rules apply, so they get more freedom.

Try checking this, it may be your problem:


Settings- Wireless & Networks- Mobile Networks- Data Enabled (check the box) If this isn't checked you don't get 3G. I'm "pretty sure" this is an option on FRG01B drop but I'm running a ROM I built from Koush and CyanogenMod's AOSP so I could be wrong.

Yes Jn, I agree was well on your comment about the community, and since you said it first, I agree on flash. Yeah, it's nice, but I think in a bit I'll be pulling it and regaining space for other apps. It's like a fad, you can go and play online, etc.

But I reserve final thoughts until after the one with HW accel comes out, if at all.

Lastly, while it is hard to consider, let's ALL face something: The Droid is not going to be our last phone (Let's not change to a death, dying thread eh?)

If this becomes a fact, and IMO it is not, I already have it, and run it, and wll be content until I get my next phone.

Sorry to say but we know far more in these forums tban the vast majority of VZW reps.

My wife is a tech for actual Verizon and not an outsourced call center. These call centers are last to know anything. Even more, these places are who you reach when you dial *611. There is absolutely NO INFO in rep infobanks regarding 2.2 besides a list of features at this time. Anyone who works for VZW that reads this can confirm this, and I am 100% certain about that. Any info you get from dialing *611 and talking about 2.2 at this time is either made up or something they read online (in forums like this). There is nothing in my wife's infobank today about VZW permanently removing 2.2 support. This really means nothing, as tomorrow it may say something. The moral of this post is to agree with OneTenderRebel because he is 100% correct. All ANYONE can do is wait at this point because VZW probably hasn't made ANY decisions about the future of 2.2 for Droid 1 yet. Speculation does nothing but waste everyone's time, just wait.

Finally.....We have the most intelligent post in this forum since I joined and me and a co-worker are astounded it took this long for someone else to say it. Thank you and he is the only one so far in here that is telling the truth,,my god I posted this info before and oh well.
