Verizon Set to Alter their Upgrade Policy

yeah ive been seeing that all over the forums. kind of makes me wonder why noones been doing that already.

is it that easy? just sign a one year and pay 70 extra for the device?

I'm on my 3rd 2 yr. contract and I've never been able to get an upgrade after only a yr. They always make me wait 20 months, and believe me I've tried. I feel like I'm getting jipped after reading all of these posts about getting them after a year.

It has been confirmed by someone on another site that I visit (VZW dealer) that if you have an upgrade available now, use it, because it will be gone after January 16! This policy is retroactive, and because this was considered a promotion, it does not affect your contract.

To clarify, the (13-20 month) early upgrade is going away. The end of contract (20-24 month) upgrade continues.

I've been with Verizon for over 10+ years (15 maybe) and I remember that there was a time before the ability to upgrade after the 13 month. For "ME" this is no big deal. The only thing I'd like different from my current Moto Droid 1is a little larger screen such as the 4.3" on the X for ebook reading.

Then again I don't think I'm going to upgrade for a long time if Verizon is going to charge extra for LTE. For ME there is nothing I want to do on my phone in LTE that I can't do with 3g or WiFi. The fact is that I use WiFi at home, the super market, coffee shop, and the numerous hotspots around the town where I live. As for the larger screen I'd like to have, when you get right down to it a Kindle or a Nook is a much better investment.

Whats your price plan? The base price plan had to be 49.99 or higher to get an annual upgrade.

I'm also not into paying more for LTE. I'm in an area where signal is very rarely an issue and my phone is pretty freakin' fast as it is. I am tickled pink to have our data costs down to $10 a month (after our $20 discount on each line), so I'm not into suddenly increasing our bill by $80 a month.

Guess I'm glad I just used my NE2 if that's going away. Bummer. First they lowered it from $100 to $50, now it's gone away. Sigh.

I've always had a 2 year plan and never had opportunity to upgrade early, I guess my family plan 700 min isn't eligible.

Reminds me when I got a card in the mail (conveniently just after the 30 day trial on a new phone) telling me I was a VIP customer and was eligible for free phone returns for new phones for 30 days (ie no restocking fee). Notice I said I was given this AFTER purchasing a new phone and AFTER the 30 days were up (and I had already paid a restocking fee). Then when I mentioned it for my next new phone (2 years later) they told me that program was only in effect for one year! YES that means it was a BS plan that could never be used. I thought that was a low blow!

I stick with verizon because of coverage. If I thought I'd get same coverage for calls, I'd switch as soon as I could.

This is incredibly surprising to me, to be honest, especially with U.S. Cellular going in the total opposite direction. I thought that if anything we were going to see more relaxed policy from VZW regarding upgrades based on U.S. Cellular's new program.

Am I correct in my understanding that if the second line on my plan is currently eligible for an upgrade based on NE2, that upgrade will stand? We signed our first contract in January of 2009, and the second line has not signed a new one since. The primary line (my line) signed a new contract in June.

John: Verizon Looks Like They Are Changing Their Upgrade Policy
Paul: That's outrageous. I'm going to AT&T, it's not as bad as everyone says.
George: I'll bet it's because of the switch to 4G
Ringo: Yeah, that's the reason why. They want to soak us for more money, evil giant phone company.
Harpo: Well, I'm going to call over there and get it straightened out right now:
Groucho: They are not changing my date. They try that and I'll just tell the rep off until they give me my way.
Chico: Harpo what the rep say.
Harpo: These reps are clueless. We know more then they do because we read it on the internet.
Larry: Hey Moe. They don't want to give us any good equipment anymore.
Moe: Don't be a wise guy. I'll punch them in the face. (turns to Curly Joe and punches him)
Curley: What was that for? I don't work at Verizon anymore.

This thread will be up here for some time, right along with the HTC thread and the iPhone to Verizon thread.

LOL that what I was thinking after reading 1/2 way into the thread.

I really would like carries have a policy of less upgrades so that phone makers would have to make better phones for the long haul. :motdroidhoriz:

I spoke to a rep a couple hours ago about this. She was a little surprised that I knew about this because she didn't realize the info had leaked, but she told me that all promos that anyone may have by 16 Jan will still be valid. Thus, they will not take your promo away or make you wait longer than necessary. She even said that these promos ARE written into the contracts. This policy change will only affect accounts that are started or re-upped after 16 Jan. She also mentioned that she was not sure if 16 Jan was the official date and that it may occur some time in Feb.

I for one am going to be pretty annoyed if I'm stuck for another 8-12 months before I can upgrade.

Someone else said it. If they are going to change the terms, then we should be able to switch to a 1-yr contract with no penalty. At a minimum I hope I can just tack on another year to the end of my contract and get the 1-yr contract price. I feel like this next batch of phones will easily carry me for 2 years, although the phone that can double as a super-mini laptop is appealing and this next batch is not quite there.

Exactly! US Cell's commercials now all tout you can upgrade in "months not years like other companies". For VZW to go the other way is odd.
