Verizon Set to Alter their Upgrade Policy

Where did everyone read you'll pay full retail price for a new phone upgrade? It's not true. The discounts on promotional pricing in exchange for a 2 year agreement stays in place and will likely have deeper discounts than now. The only thing going away is the primary line getting the bonus of the New Every Two discount which is about $35 to $50, depending on plan. Other than that, the new phone is subsidized.

At&t has this same upgrade policy...its impossible to get at&t to allow an upgrade before you have gone at least 22 months or something near that in to your contact..that's why me and my husband switched to VZW....i personally don't mind waiting to get a new phone...my droid x rocks!

Not sure when this was, but for the past 4 years up until now, that is incorrect. At&t allows you to do an "early upgrade" after six months of having any phone* (*iPhone, 30 days). For basic phones/"QMDs", this gives you $75 off of the No Commitment price (instead of the full $150 that you get after 20 months in), for smart phones (except iPhone), you only get $100 off for an "early upgrade" instead of the $400 you would get off after 20 months when your full "upgrade" is available.

There are also cases where depending on what plan/feature you have and your tenor yield even more "rewards", much like the NE2, where you get $50/$100 towards your "upgrade" (except iPhone) and/or waived activation fees. If you have a smart phone (data plan) and have the single unlt'd plan, you can also sometimes get an "upgrade" within the 14-24 month range (not sure what criteria have to be met) and on a family plan 1400 minutes or above, basically the same rules apply.

If you had to pay full price for a new phone after 2 years, I think more people would hold on to they're current phone longer. $600 for a phone is a lot of money. That's not what is happening. Verizon is saying that if you want to upgrade early then you have to pay full price for the phone. If you wait you will still get a subsidized phone.

i called verizon last night. talked to 3 reps and 3 supervisors... all seperate calls.... this is what i was told by everyone....

verizon has no plans to take away any upgrades, discounts, etc to existing customers. the upgrades, discounts, NE2, Etc. will stand for all current customers and will stay in effect (be grandfathered) for the life of the contract. the new plans are aimed at new customers.

a few of them mentioned that this was due to the "next gen" of phones and devces coming out

somthing to do with 4g devices?

It seems like the reps are are what seems the last to always know what is going on.....so it seems

True, but in cases like this forums take the ball and run with it. Out of what initially comes out as a suggestion of information discovered has developed into so called facts that no one can verify.

John: Verizon Looks Like They Are Changing Their Upgrade Policy
Paul: That's outrageous. I'm going to AT&T, it's not as bad as everyone says.
George: I'll bet it's because of the switch to 4G
Ringo: Yeah, that's the reason why. They want to soak us for more money, evil giant phone company.
Harpo: Well, I'm going to call over there and get it straightened out right now:
Groucho: They are not changing my date. They try that and I'll just tell the rep off until they give me my way.
Chico: Harpo what the rep say.
Harpo: These reps are clueless. We know more then they do because we read it on the internet.
Larry: Hey Moe. They don't want to give us any good equipment anymore.
Moe: Don't be a wise guy. I'll punch them in the face. (turns to Curly Joe and punches him)
Curley: What was that for? I don't work at Verizon anymore.

This thread will be up here for some time, right along with the HTC thread and the iPhone to Verizon thread.

Quick question (not sure if it has been already discussed):

I'm somewhat nervous about this new upgrade policy, as the existing VZW upgrade system was strict enough. I do recall AT&T being as bad if not worse, while Tmo was pretty lenient on upgrades.

Anywho, does this change in policy provide enough for me to get out of my contract early? I have already been on my contract for exactly 12 months this month, and was wondering if I could use this to get out of contract and perhaps try Sprint out for a little.

Let me know!

Haha, made me chuckle. Nice names. Interesting prediction, maybe iphone thread will last longer?

Apparently didn't bother to read page 1. All we know is what you see on page 1. Everything from that point on is speculation. I will speculate and say no, this is not going to let you out of your contract early, and I'll go a step further and say that the date set for your next upgrade that you see on your my Verizon account will not change.

^^^Verizon (from what I understand) is NOT changing your contract. Next time you sign a contract with them, that is when your contract will be changed. The early upgrade that people are talking about is NOT in your contract, so if they don't allow you to upgrade early, they are not technically "breaking contract". It's a courtesy that is extended to some people. New every 2, however, IS in some people's contracts (so you better expect that come June 2012, I will be expecting to get my NE2 discount as stated in my contract.)

If your in a 12 month conract then yes...but if your in a 24 month then well.... your in a 24 moth contract. (youll have to pay fees) And after rereading the policy it looks like vz wants to just offer upgrades at will...("special offers") Im betting those offers will come in around 12 months so dont flip just yet.

Yea the ones that are talking about paying full retail are the ones that normally upgrade yearly. Now since yearly (after Jan 16th ceses) those that have a contract under those terms would have no choice but to pay full retail. Guys just wait your 2 yr out. Move to 1 year. Even if you DON'T plan to upgrade phones. Then you are not tied into a contract where you can get a subsidized phone for another 22 months.

This policy is doing away with early upgrades at twelve months and moving it to twenty months out of a twenty-four month contract. Locking you to your phone eight more months before upgrading at a discounted cost.

With the exception of a few short-term promotional periods, the Verizon (corp) stores around me have never allowed early upgrades (prior to 20 months). I have had Verizon service for nearly 20 years. So this is no big deal to me.

I actually did read page 1, I just didn't see anything that discussed the scenario I just mentioned.

But thanks for your insight.

Ah I see, so they're in gray area with that being that it's a courtesy to begin with. Thanks buddy!

Thanks a lot, yeah I think I'll just suck it up and accept it for what it is. I do like to change devices a bit, and don't like paying $500 for a new phone, so I'll just hope that whatever phone I buy next will be as versatile and open to upgrade as this Moto Droid I'm still fostering. :)

My thing is...is this a result of the iphone "possibly" coming out? Or are they trying to get people to hold on to devices longer? I'd probably have an iphone for two years also if I had to drop $4-600 everytime I lost it cause theres no insurance on it.
But as a phone company, they push out phones often. And even if you keep your phone for two years..it's not like the iphone, where you can go to an apple store and also get help with it. People with ordinary phones..blackberries, androids...****...family planned samsung flip phones...

Once they discontinue your phone (typically 7-8 months later), your phone is obsolete. And they stop giving support for your phone.
So say if you had the phone for a year and a day then all of a sudden the screen goes black. But they discontinued the phone two three months before then. You're practically screwed. They will honor your insurance and give you another phone...but even then..you have no support for it.

Verizon with the swindle award for 2011.
