VZW disabling tethering apps from market

Personally I don't tether, other than seeing if it worked, because I have no need to. There is nothing I need to tether that doesn't already have an available wifi connection. That said, if I did have something to tether would I? Probably would, and I wouldn't really feel all that broken up about it. I still doubt VZW can tell and even if they can there will be a work around to hide it anyway so it's a loosing battle for people that root and hack their phone. However, VZW will shut down non-paying tether use by most new buyers and current owners that don't already use one of the market apps just by removing them because most users don't look past the android market...

THem removing the apps from the market is a good first step however it isn't going to stop the guy running his ps3, xbox, laptop, desktop, tablet, and bit torrent server off his cell phone because its "unlimited data" and that sounds to be their biggest problem.

You never going to stop all the idiots. Just if you make weed them out and reduce the numbers, when you do go after them you wont have as big an outrage and bad publicity unlike you will have if you went after a large number.

The funny thing is I honestly didn't know WiFi Tether for Root Users was on the market. I always side-loaded it, ironically, from the Google Code page.

I have no problem with the people who are going to tether just a little here and there and then own up to it and pay the fee whenever Verizon cracks down. What gets me will be (and mind you, I guaran-dam-tee this will happen) when the crackdown comes and everyone who is doing this, and knew they were doing it against the contract's terms, throws a hissy fit on here, on blogs, to the news media, etc and essentially drags Verizon's name through the mud because they were being selfish and knowingly broke the contract and got caught. Thats what angers me.

Verizon does a lot of things good, and they have some policies that are bad. This is not one of the bad ones, and I will actually applaud them when they inevitably crack down on everyone who is abusing the system. I don't want my bandwidth tied down by someone using it to run their computer, ps3, and television. Thats not fair to me, and its not fair to everyone else in this area who is paying for their service and using it legitimately. I have absolutely no respect whatsoever for those who are blatantly breaking the contract, flaunting it in our faces, and arrogantly stating that they are better than the law and will never get caught. I look forward to the day you are caught... Just don't blame Verizon for protecting their own.

My biggest gripe is the word "unlimited"

If they said 5gb....I'd know it's 5gb. but "unlimited" means unlimited!!!

They can't be like the women who say "no" when they really mean "yes"

You have unlimited on your phone...you don't have an unlimited bandwidth isp when you sign up for a cellphone plan. Its pretty easy to understand to those that want to understand it (or those with common sense)...

I'm pretty sure its easy to understand to those who claim they don't understand it too...but making buffet analogies is easier then just admitting you're wrong. Human nature I guess...

I'm sorry, but if you want to question my intelligence, then please just bluntly do so.

Do not make indirect off-hand comments instead.

To me the whole "free tether" is just like downloading music illegally. I tried it a few times to see if it worked but I'm not risking them charging me for it so I don't have it. I don't want to lose the ability to root my phone and get rid of bloatware and run a custom Rom just because people think unlimited is as much as they can use with 2-5 devices a month. In my opinion if it doesn't stop then phones will get more and more locked and pretty soon all we will have is an APhone.

The funny thing about it all is that those who agree with what Verizon naturally assume that those who tether seen to be ignorant to the fact that it is violation of TOS. If you sit down and read the TOS you will see that even modification to your phone from factory is violation. If you lie to them (and is stated like that) you violate TOS. So don't mix up your days of the week when you talk to them, or you will be a bad Guy.

With the removing of the apps off the market it will only effect those who don't look further than the market.

It isn't a violation of your TOS, its a violation of your warranty. You aren't stealing anything from Verizon by simply rooting your phone. However, they have a clause in there to protect themselves to someone rooting their phone and breaking it. Verizon isn't going to replace it because you thought you were better than their (or Moto/HTC/Samsung/etc) engineers. They have no clause to cut off your service (and they are not allowed by law) simply because you rooted.

However, its what you do AFTER you root the phone that allows them to cut off your service. Tethering without paying is stealing their property. By that reasoning alone, they can shut you down, or at the very least make you pay for all the tethering you do AND THERE ISN'T A THING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.

just wondering why some people are saying that the data isn't equal, as it is compressed more on the phone. I can easily change the user agent on my phone and it will pull th same data as a desktop. Also there are torrent apps for your phone that will let you download large files using just your phone. A person could use there phone as their desktop and their only source of the internet without tethering. So the data is created equal and a person can simply use a lot of data in a given month, i myself have used 8 gigs in a month without tethering. The people that use large amounts of data aren't necessarily tether abusers, and are using their phone in the way they are suppose to.

Also If they(verizon) can track what app is using the data then why haven't they already shut the people down that are using these apps. And if they can track that which i really don't know if they can or not. It would not be that difficult to make a ghosting app you mask where the data is going, as well as if you even have the app on your phone.

Oh I don't doubt that you could use that much, even moreso now that LTE is out. However, don't be surprised if Verizon throttles you back in the future because you are using significantly more than the average user (who I would guess only uses 1-2GB, (maybe 3-4GB in a bad month) per month). And they would be well within their rights to do it.

As for them not shutting people down, yet. Just wait, its coming. They needed to get all their ducks in a row to make it happen quickly so that hackers wouldn't have the time to bypass it before getting singled out. The crackdown is coming. Removing the apps from the Market was just Step 1.

Clearly you've never read any of my posts. I'm as blunt as they come. Please find someone else to start an online argument with as I have no interest in convincing you how blunt I am...
