ALERT! 2.2 FroYo Circus continues...FRG01B is Official get it here.

ESE81 is 2.1.

Here I sit patiently waiting for OTA 2.2.

Does anyone know if, after the 2.2 OTA, if the corporate exchange does not work you can re-install 2.1 if you still have the 2.1 update.zip.

Thanks,

Bill

i dont get it so whats this mean for someone who manually updated last week?

would someone answer this please? i updated last week is this the same file or something fixed? how do i uninstall last weeks update.zip? to use this one.

i have read through this post and alot of ppl are asking this.

thanks in advance,

You mean this didn't answer your questions?

Ok so if I updated the the first leaked version last week is there a difference in this new update?
In the build? No. In the packaging? Yes. In the install method? Yes. Has this question already been asked repeatedly, yes. :)

if someone like me doesn't understand what build or packing does, then no.

let me ask it this way: if i installed last week would this weeks run better or be any different to me?

thanks for the quick reply above.

If you installed last week then the important thing for you as a user need to know is the end result is exactly the same unless you're having issues with your phone after the previous update. :)

If you're having issues then the only way to uninstall the update is to use a program called RSDLite to push a stock SBF file to your phone, then update using the OP's file to stock FRG01B. The only other alternative is to root and install it that way.

If you're running non-rooted FRG01B from last week, the answer to that is unknown. Because of the difference in installation and packaging, it might make a difference, or it might not. As has been said, the builds are the same.

If you want to stay non-rooted on FRG01B and you aren't having any trouble with last week's distribution, I'd suggest this is a good time to chill out, enjoy your Droid for what it does and wait and see what happens...

If you're having trouble with last week's non-rooted FRG01B, or if you feel it's time for a life-change for your Droid, then the world lies before you, all you have to do is educate yourself about what is available and then choose.

But to answer your questions 2 and 3, anything you install other than Verizon's official OTA is at your own risk. And, last rumor of any kind was that Verizon has delayed the OTA while they work on some stuff (probably related to Flash).

If you really want to be safe, wait for the official Verizon OTA.

If you are a little more adventurous, try this OP's stock non-rooted FRG01B.

If you are ready to try the next step to the edge, try stock rooted FRG01B or stock rooted FRG22.

If you're ready to fly, go for the custom ROMs.

Your choice... dancedroid
I think I need a ten-step program to overcome my fear of rooting, but here goes. I am feeling a little adventurous today and amd sick and tired of waiting for froyo. I would like to try the stock rooted option. Stupid questions to follow. Jrummy states that I need sprecovery or clockwork to install. I assume that means I need to root 2.01 and then install one of those programs. If this is correct then I am hoping I can purchase easy root and then proceed from there??? Help, I am already wanting to back away from the ledge.

You don't need to do anything like that. If you want to root either install SPRecovery and flash in a ROM, buy Easy Root, or dig up how to use ADB to push stuff to your phone to do it. If you use Easy Root you can then install ClockworkMOD from the market and install Clockwork Recovery from within the app and run that way, or you could save yourself the buck and follow the video directions here -- Video: Flashing SPRecovery SBF to Stock 2.1 | Droid Life: A Motorola Droid Blog.

If I were on 2.01 or 2.1 now I'd probably go the EasyRoot route first then I'd install Clockwork and make my decisions from there...

Make sure you put your safety belt on first. Knowledge trumps fear.

So true, which is why I am freaking out. I have read so many posts here on how to root, but it is so overwhleming and there is a huge disparity among the ways to do it and which way is supposedly best that I am coping by burying my head in the sand!!! Deep breathing is not helping either! Ok here goes. Maybe I will see you all on the rescue squad side!

Ok, since some people seem to still be confused I hope this simplifies things and ties together numerous old comments.

1) Both this and last week's FRG01B Froyo releases are for the original Droid only, not for the X or any other Android device.

2) Both releases bring you up to the same exact build, no difference in features. They're both the same thing. The only change is that last week's release is for incrementally patching/upgrading an older build (hence the smaller file size) while the new release will completely wipe and replace an older build. In the end, you get the same thing, but the wiping results in a "clean" build. One is not technically better than the other. It's akin to upgrading an existing copy of Windows versus installing a full non-upgrade version from scratch, as someone has already used as a good analogy.

3) If you are unrooted, don't want to root, and already installed last week's patch job, there is no way to install the new release without rolling back to a prior one first. Because the new release will just examine the Droid otherwise and essentially say "I'm already on here, I don't need to be installed."

3a) If you decide to root last week's release (via Easy Root or classic methods), then you can install the new release over the old one even though it's the same build. Being rooted makes a difference here. In the end, you'll have the new install and your phone will return to an unrooted state (at least with Easy Root).

4) If you have either release on your Droid, you will not get alerted by Verizon to do an OTA install. You'll already have it, unless an even newer one is eventually released (which noone knows at this point will occur).

5) A "clean" install of the new build is not guaranteed to fix any problems people had with the upgrade version, but people have been generally happier with it.

6) If you want to install FRG22 afterwards, you can only do so if you are rooted. Reaction to FRG22 seems to be mixed, so I'd only suggest it if still having issues with FRG01B.

7) Don't get so caught up in all this that you actually forget the most important thing - to enjoy your Droid! :blackdroid:

The problem with this thread is that the non-rooters who forced the OTA last week are basically being asked to do things to their phones that they've never done before in order to install this thread's OTA file, so it's like rooting/rsdlite 101 all over again... but with the goal to remain stock, ironically.

Hopefully Verizon will push out this thread's file to everyone again... wasn't that what happened with John Galt anyway, isn't that how he got this file?

Here is a quick step by step from one newbie to the rest. Its a copy paste of multiple posts.

1. Root phone using any of the root methods. (I used the pay Easy Root App. $1 is totally worth it.)
2. Download the updated version file. (Pick the one you want. I used the Op's 2.2)
3. Rename file to update.zip
4. Download the file to the sd card
5. Restart the phone by pressing power and x at same time.
6. After you get the yellow triangle, hit the volume up and camera button at the same time
7. Use the d-pad to navigate to the “apply: update.zip” option, and choose the file you just dragged onto your microSD card.
8. When done, choose Reboot system.
9 Verify everything is working.
10. Reroot, if you choose. (I did.)
(Optional) Do a battery pull for good measure.

Good simple summary, but I don't believe that will work for those that forced the OTA last week, or for those that are running FRG22. But maybe that was your intent in the first place anyway, so I'm not criticizing. :)

This does indeed work for people who installed last week's OTA.
