When mom pays the bill the update will still be available. Either that or leave your Droid on all the time on airplane mode if you have wifi available.

I just unrooted and put 2.01 on my Droid, can I download the file from the first page and update to 2.2 without updating to 2.1 first?

I have stock 2.1 (non-root) and want to install the full 2.2 system (linked to in post 1). Do I need to root before doing this?

Sorry for asking what has probably been asked several (OK many) times over the 67 pages here...but...my head is spinning after so many pages :icon_eek:

So based on the information from Dwoid about there being some small differences in the content of the OP build from the version being pushed out over the OTA and if his specuation ends up being true that this is indeed some type of manual or recovery build is there any advantage to having one over the other?

When the partial patch update was being pushed out people were complaining of a lot of little issues, when the OP put this version up everyone was very pleased. Reasoning was because the new build was a complete upgrade and not a patch approach. Has anyone confirmed that the OTA is still just a patch up? If that is the case, is that another reason the OP version my actually be a better route to go?

Well I guess the official ota is more like a 'patch' version cuz when a nonrooted user accepts it, is just upgrades their system leaving their apps and settings intact. My bro got his yesterday and that's what happened.

1. The link to install on page 1 is a signed version. I see no difference between it and the one that I actually downloaded that is leaked.

2. If your rooted then you need to go to page 6 and download Jrummy's version which will keep you from losing root.

3. If you're not comfortable with any of this, then simply wait for the OTA.

I think that out of all the updates I've seen come out in the past year and a half, I've never seen so much confusion. Part of that is our fault, and when I say our I mean everybody in the forum, not just CK and myself. I think we tend to read too much into every little comment. To the best of my knowledge other then the size of the app it doesn't appear to be anything different then what's going out OTA. I wouldn't call what went out last week a patch, it was indeed 2.2 as is this one.

Supposedly what was added on was some security enhancements for business users. If that's so I wouldn't know because I never looked for it in the original version.

My question was specifically related to a series of posts in this thread that indicated that the initial "official" OTA that came out on 8/3 and the corresponding leaked FRG01B was significantly smaller than the "official" FRG01B in the OP. Speculation was that this was because the original FRG01B just did an update of a some of the key system files to bring you up to 2.2 rather than a clean install of 2.2 replacing the entire contents of the system folder (analogy of doing an upgrade of XP to Windows 7 vs. a clean install of 7). What I am wondering is if the FRG01B that is coming OTA now (that resumed Tuesday night) is like the original where it just patches some key system files to get you to 2.2 but does not do a complete replace or if it was like the one in the OP. And, if it is not like the one in the OP, is there value in taking the one from the OP over the OTA because many people have reported that the clean install approach seems to be a bit more stable than the patch approach?

So I got last weeks FRG10b instead of FRG22because I didn't want to root. I didn't wait for the OTA because I heard VZW would remove the hotspot feature and charge $20/month to get it turned on.

It looks like the jokes on me, because I can't find the hotspot option in settings. Where is it supposed to be? I'm thinking that since FRG10b is the signed VZW version, it already had that feature removed and I'm pretty much stuck without rooting (which I'm not going to do).

Like has been said at least thirty or forty times, yes.

Like has been said at least twenty or thirty times, this file does not require root. It actually breaks root if you install it.

Like I've personally said probably five times in this thread alone, rooting is the only way to get a WiFi hotspot (and Ad-Hoc only at that) on your Droid 1. Perhaps that's the only way it'll ever be. Verizon doesn't want it on because it competes with the flagship phones. They even charge for official USB tethering unless something's changed since the leaked FRG01B hit the scene weeks ago, and from what I've heard reported (I believe in this thread), it still pay-to-play. If you heard a rumor that VZW or Motorola put a WiFi tethering option in, you heard wrong. That rumor's been quashed since the first leaked builds had no such option.

What does that mean anyway -- that you can't use *any* wifi without paying extra, even your own home network which you're already paying for??

No, what it means is you can't use your 3G connection to put the internets on your computron via your Droid without paying VWZ thirty pieces of silver. If we do the math, work in inflation, the devaluation of the dollar...

$20 a month. That's what the Droid Xers have to pay. Wow, the coincidence... :)

Odex files in Jimmy's file

I installed Jimmy's FRG01B rooted file over a FRG22 ROM and all went well. While looking at stuff in \system\app\ that I could delete to save room and memory, I noticed that most *.apk files had an associated *.odex file. What are they and can they be deleted or removed in some manner?

Thanks for the help
