Here's the 5.5.893 update file str8 from Moto. No root necessary.

As I stated earlier in my last post I was dropping wi-fi every 10-30 seconds at work last night. Since I've been home today it hasnt dropped once (been on it since I got home). So maybe something with the router at work? I havent lost anything yet all day today at home. But I am only running 3g (no 4g around me at all). Camera still functioning great. Been blasting my songs thru my computer speakers at home and it sounds great. But I never noticed a problem with noise thru headphones before anyways. Cant really tell if the phone is any faster or not and havent really tested battery yet as I've had it plugged up all day. 3g signal has been on the phone all day too. So hopefully this has done something for the good.

I followed the directions in the link provided on page 6 of this thread. Leaked 5.7.893 Full update (.886 --> .893) - Android Forums
My question is this: I had updated to 5.5.893 before I went to this thread, once there I upgraded to 5.6.893 then to 5.7.893. All installed fine. In the tread it says:

  1. Depending upon which update you have installed, pick the next increment from the files below and update via stock recovery
  2. Now, go to the top and follow the procedure above titled For stock users on 5.5.886 with no partition modifications (Webtop, etc) at all
SO once I did #1 do I keep on doing #2 which is:
  1. Use this post R3L3AS3DRoot and 43V3R root for the BIONIC v2.1 - xda-developers to get your system reverted to true OOB stock
    1. This file will revert your BIONIC to stock. It can do it as plain stock or as rooted stock or as 43v3r rooted stock, your choice, all in one.
    2. Extract the files in the archive to a folder and then run R3L3AS3DRoot.bat and follow the prompts carefully
  2. Use this file http://www.mediafire.com/file/ah4t6ruiksupuun/Blur_Version.5.5.886.XT875.Verizon.en.US.zip to upgrade to 5.7.893 - place it on SDCard-ext, not internal

I did exactly what this post said to do, now I'm on 5.7.893... Took me forever to find the step by step instructions, thank you very much for posting!

I'm a little confused here. It looks like you installed 3 updates; going from 5.5.886 to 5.5.893, then 5.5.893 to 5.6.893 and finally 5.6.893 to 5.7.893. Then you posted yet another set of instructions using a file to bring it to 5.7.893 (after reverting the Bionic to stock). is that final final necessary if you are unrooted to begin with? Or did you post 2 different ways?

I used the method of installing the three individual updates.... Sorry, I didn't mean to add confusion. Honestly, I don't know what the latter section of the OP means....

I'd love to update, but this whole thing seems risky. I've read through every page and don't believe I've got a definitive answer on a few questions.

1. Will this prevent OTA capability in the future?
2. Do I have to wipe my phone to stock before doing this?
3. Overall, a better update than stock 5.5.886?

First and foremost: Are you rooted?

1) IN THEORY, no it shouldn't. When Verizon sends out an update it pings your phone to see what version you have. If it isn't the new version, Verizon downloads the update. You get a notification and you install it by pressing "Yes." If the phone is up to date, it passes over your phone. That's assuming what you download is the official update. I did this with my OG Droid when I upgraded to Froyo and there were 2 OTA updates after that that went though fine. If the file isn't official, then all bets are off.
2) Since you said you aren't rooted then no.
3) If should help with data loss and camera, among other things.

If you're unsure, then wait. When it does start rolling out there's a good chance that someone will be able to capture it and post here. Then move that file to the root (main) area of the sd-ext card and install from there.

I did it but what a night

I am currently at 5.7.893 and my webtop version shows

But it was one heck of a night
My mistake was I found the update at bedtime but I considered the network dropping issue a big deal and was fed up

I used the first method and flashed each update one step at a time and got to 5.7.893 the first time
It took me a while I had never done any phones before and this phone was not rooted but bone stock

This is where my night really went bad. My mobile net work was off and would not come back on no matter how many airplane modes I toggled or even if I rebooted
The Webtop was not working either

I did more reading and ended up flashing back to stock
Webtop is back but still no mobile network and I had lost everything in the phone
You cant even restore your back up contacts without the mobile network

I reasoned that updating might turn it back on because it was after all designed to fix the shut off problem
I did the one step update
webtop is back but still no mobile network and only half my back ups would work

I was exhausted by this time. I flashed back to stock deciding I would return the phone first chance
tell them I screwed up resetting the phone

It's now 4:30 AM and I have to get up at 6:45 for work
I laid down but couldn't sleep, mad at myself for screwing up my expensive phone
I plugged the phone in to the charger and forced myself to sleep

2 hours later (6:30) I wake up feeling like crap but I pick the phone up and look at it

OMG the wireless is connected to 3g (all I get here at home)

I reinstall my contacts so I can at least make and receive phone calls
then what ever possessed me but I flashed the one step update to 5.7.893

It worked this time
Webtop works the phone has not dropped the network unless I was in known dead spots
The camera focuses and is much better to use

So after a very crappy day at work I got to reload most of my apps, sleep, and have a phone I truly enjoy now

to make a long story short, even after the sleepless night, I am very glad I did it

as for the official update, Im not too worried about it. I am sure a version will posted here for those of us that updated
and even if it isn't, I know how to restore the phone to stock now.
even recovering everything and reloading it isn't bad if you do so with a little pre-planning and a lot of sleep first

Alright, I'm by no means an expert, but have been installing leaked OTAs for a few years, so I'd like to think I know a little something :icon_eek:. To answer your questions:

1.) There are a lot of variables here. It all depends on if Verizon Wireless/Moto decide to utilize similar "System Version" base numbers. If they do, then your device will update with the OTAs that Verizon/Moto push out. If not, well, you won't get the OTA directly from the Verizon servers, but rest assured the development community (such as the folks you see on this forum) will provide a method to update your device. To put your mind as ease, I've always had the latest device software on my devices before Verizon ever pushes out the updates, thanks to sites like these :)

2.)If your "System Version" is 5.5.886, then you are out of the box stock, so there is no need to "wipe" your device. Go to the files listed above, download the first file, and install the update via recovery, then the second, then the third.

3.)Yes. Crazy Awesome!

Please don't take this as a professional response, but instead take it from someone who was just as skeptical as you are back when I had my OG Droid. As for other viewers of my post, please feel free to chime in on my response. Best of luck!

Adam

1. Dont worry about that. If this update leak blocks us from taking the official OTA it will only be a matter of days before somebody comes up with a method to install the official OTA.
2. Probably not... but depends on your current setup. If you're fully stock then no, you install and it just works
3. I didnt install the previous leak so I cant compare.. but what I can say is that I wasnt having many issues before.. now it's even smoother.

All I can say is this that I havent had a single data dropout (which happened a lot to me) and my battery life has improved dramatically.

Seriously, the best part about this 5.5.893 update is that my battery isnt drained so quickly by the radio. Awesome!
