Here's the 5.5.893 update file str8 from Moto. No root necessary.

There have been several people saying they are having issues with this update & asking how to go back to stock AFTER they did the update. I STRONGLY suggest people do their homework BEFORE hacking their phones or any other equipment. YES this is an update that will eventually be OTA...but since we are being adventurous & being the forerunners by applying it BEFORE it is officially ready there WILL be some problems. Moto says the update is 30-60 days away because of testing...who do you think are part of the testing group? US! They know this stuff gets leaked & I am sure they monitor the forums...one of the best ways to test anything is to through it into the wild & see how it works. This way they won't be responsible if anything goes wrong. We are "voiding" our TOS by hacking our phones...and the software gets tested in the real world.

So before applying ANY hack please do your homework BEFORE you change your phone.

Well I am one of those people yesterday who did the update mentioned on this board. Everything went smooth and updated to 5.5.893. Well so far, after a day on it. It sucks. I get dropped from 3g to 4g every 10-15mins. Its not stable for me. And also what has happened in addition to the dropped data is my apps or email that use 3g/4g. They force close. It was good for the first 15-20mins yesterday after I updated. Yesterday, after the first 15-20mins I went to Verizon and told them I want another phone cause of what's happening. So I am getting my replacement on Monday. I was already have problems with the phone anyways. I know I will ne getting a used phone but it can't be worse than what's happening right now.

So I advise you. Be careful on doing this update.

So will having used this leaked update affect us being able to receive ICS when motorola finally gives it to us?

IMO to everyone reading this thread....do not install this update.....this is not the final OTA build being released. Why not install it anyways you might want to know? Well first off it will take you off the upgrade path as this isnt the official OTA. Secondly there are several updates that have leaked since then and since this is an unofficial update, you will probably have to FXZ back to stock and manually apply the official OTA when it is released.

Not to trash anyone but I think it was very poor judgement of the OP to post this file with these instructions. Anyone who has done this currently has voided their warranty and a lot of people might have some massive headaches now when the actual OTA is released wondering why they cant use it.

Here is the list of current leaked updates?
5.5.891
5.5.892
5.5.893
5.6.893
5.7.893
5.7.894

Your best bet if you really cant wait is to fully research this before even considering updating......remember just because you didnt root doesnt mean you havent voided your warranty.

I agree that people should NOT to ANY hacking to their phone until they research it AND know how to get back to stock if it's needed. However I used the Cheesecake method to get the update and my phone is running PERFECTLY. Data is the best it's ever been, the camera is VERY fast compared to how it was before, and there is NO LAG whatsoever in the phone (not that the phone was slow before the update.

However to really blame the OP for posting is wrong. Everyone needs to take responsibility for their own actions and if you will risk a $300 phone without taking the time to research the pro's & cons well you need to accept what you get. As with anything technology...somethings work & some don't...it's the nature of the beast!

I get what you're saying, but I still can't help muse at the irony of worrying too much about the intact warranty of a sometimes non-functional phone.

:p

Reseated my Sim card and no more issues. Havent lost 3g since then. did lots of testing in areas where my signal would normally leave and now it stays just fine. Even my GPS works much quicker now. Guess I'll go ahead and root her up now...went in the Verizon store after work and to talk to my buddy Jon and he has a rooted bionic and also did this update last night.. For some good news to you, I HELD THE RAZR. very very slim compared to holding my bionic. Speed wise (scrolling) they seem what and what TO ME. Too thin for my big hands. Otherwise he only let me hold it for maybe 10-20 secs and had to put it up. Said they got them in Tuesday, at least thats what he told me!

people really shouldnt go jumping off bridges thinking too hard about updating or not updating.
we learned a loooooooooooong time ago with the OG Droid that it's nearly impossible to truly brick a Droid.. especially a Moto Droid.
there are ways to get back to stock in case of emergency... however I will agree with those who say If you dont understand and are not comfortable with what you're about to do, DONT DO IT.
patching and flashing like this is simple.. but recovering from a misstep is not for the faint of heart.

as for the potential of voiding your warranty... yeah, it's POSSIBLE you'll void the warranty *if* you cannot restore back to stock.. is there a risk? yes. did I flash the 5.7.893 update after researching it? yes.

Guess I'll take this thing back to the store or is there away I can go back to the stock settings/radios? If not I will gladly go up the road and return it to Verizon for another. Im 30 mins til lunch from taking this phone back. It fluctuates from 3g to 1x where normally it would stay in 3g where im at now..Yes I've had data connections in spots but those are fixed with this update and the spots where i had great 3g is now broken...WTH

And if they realize it's running an unapproved software version, Verizon will GLADLY bill you full retail for your replacement. You messed it up, deal with it.

Yeah this is supposivly an official update that has been leaked correct? With us have any adverse affects on maintaining the official upgrade path? What is everyone thoughts on this I'd like to know

Nothing is an "official update" until it is approved by Verizon and pushed out. This is an official Motorola firmware file, but technically it is not an update at all - until it is approved as one.

Anyone that tells you they "know" which version will be the "official update" is full of it.

Sorry for the noob qustion (new to android) but will those of us who wait for the ota have to take all these steps also or will it be a one click update like Iphone ?

You will not have to take all these steps. You will get a message from Verizon on your phone telling you there is a system update. You then accept the update by pushing an on-screen button and the phone updates. Really easy and straight forward.

No, no, no. Not like this. You'll get a notification that you have an update and when you press "Yes" it installs. More like what you said about the iPhone.

Sometimes when the official update gets rolled out, someone will capture it and post it here. You'd download it to the root area (just in the main area) of your sd card and install from there. That's what everyone was thinking this was. It looks like it isn't.
