[How-To] Force Motorola Droid 2.1 OTA Update (ESE81)

Does it matter if im rebooting into sprecovery and choose "install update.zip"

Because when rooted, you dont get the exclamation point and hit camera button and volume up.

From what i've read going into recovery and choosing the install update.zip is the proper way to do it. How are you doing it since you don't get the standard recovery screen?

i've read that a few people have had to do factory resets before they ran the update for it to be successful. I've read so many posts in the last hour on the update I can't remember what page its on...

Maybe someone else with a successful update from a rooted phon can chime in?

It boots into the "rooted recovery" or "sprecovery" you can install roms from sd card, factory reset the phone or it gives me the option to "install: update.zip from sd card". I downloaded the file again from the second link, using a different web browser so im going to try again and post back in. Thanks for the help.

I downloaded the update using windows 7, i dropped it into my sd card and renamed it "update" i rebooted into sprecovery (im rooted) clicked install, install /sdcard/update.zip and it comes up saying "error in /sdcard/update.zip (status 7) installation aborted.

any help?
Your not rooted right? No helix launcher or anything else that i've been seeing people have been having issues with during update? The looks like its named correctly, but when you use a file explorer like astro, does it also say update.zip?

Try to download it again and copy it over again. I"m not sure that that status 7 means..

I AM rooted. Using Adamz ROM but using the stock launcher, not helix or anything.

Edit: It does say in Astro the file is: update.zip It says /sdcard/update.zip
Well, that sounds right then. It must have something to do with the MOD....

OK. No problem. This is a new process for me to. I've just been doing a lot of reading on the forums this morning (and not as much working) ;)

Download this file:

https://android.clients.google.com/updates/voles/signed-voles-ESE81-from-ESD56.fa406da6.zip <--- Direct from Google's Servers!

OR

signed-voles-ESE81-from-ESD56.fa406da6.zip

Put on the root of your sdcard (not in a folder)

Rename to update.zip

Power phone off

Boot into recovery (power phone on while holding down x)

When you see the triangle with the exclamation point, press the volume up key and camera button key (only press the camera key down half way)

Navigate to “apply update.zip” and press the gold center button on the keyboard to select it. It will start the update process

Reboot

If your installation is 'aborted', it's probably because you named the file update.zip in Windows, which results in a file called update.zip.zip. Try renaming it to just 'update'

EDIT: You can do all this from your phone without using the USB cable.. Using Astro just move the file from your download folder on SD, to the Root of SD..

Installing this will remove root access! It will kill wifi tethering. It ONLY installs over 2.01 and all of your apps/ personal info will remain untouched.

Special Thanks To...

-ugot2go123 and Speeddymon for the update.zip file

Holding down X???

What is X?

I dl'd the file on my sdcard using astro

gggrrrrrr im very tempted by this FORCE update but i been reading all posts and it looks like some ppl are having trouble with it...i think im just gonna wait for the update to be pushed to my phone

Thanks,i followed the instructions and I updated it just fine, I noticed my phone little faster than before,......love the live wallpaper....thanks to this forum, we kick assss

Keep pressing volume up and the camera button. It took me about 10 presses to get the menu to come up.
This is because the instructions are wrong.
You should press and hold the power up and then press the camera button half way down.
This will work every time.

Damn nice dmartins!

Retried on mine just to see, that was great!

But you did mean vol up ... no worries ...

OP can you update the first post to include this?

Fixt
